Underclass high school basketball prospects in Virginia
Some basketball prospects to watch in the state of Virginia in 2003-04.
These are not necessarily based on talent, but on the fact that with 326 Division 1 men's basketball programs, each program needs to recruit height
1.Scotty Reynolds (see photo below left, courtesy of "The Washington Post.")6-1 Class of 2006 Herndon High (Saw him play on 1-10-04. Despite height, can put the ball on the floor and score on anyone. Team started off 23-2 as a sophomore, with him scoring over 23 points-per-game. A scoring machine in high school. Good passer and dribbler, also. With added strength, could be another Othell Wilson, the guard who starred at the University of Virginia and later played in the NBA. On an interesting side note, "Washington Post" sportswriters Tarik El-Bashir and Josh Barr wrote on Thursday, December 30, 2004, that "Reynolds, one of the nation's top-rated juniors, arrived for the start of the third quarter after attending church, something he does every Wednesday regardless of the Hornets' schedule." This could be an interesting part of his recruitment. I haven't heard of any talented player in recent memory who is this religious. Going to church services this late in the day could interrupt with the schedule of any college's men's college basketball program.)
2.Jamont Gordon 6-4 215 Class of 2005 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth-Of-Wilson, VA)(lives in Chatham, TN and is transferring from Glencliff High in Nashville, TN) (Picked as "Mr. Basketball" in the state of Tennessee as a junior. Rated as the nation's 48-best senior by Rob Harrington of USA Today and PrepStars.com).
3.Eric Devendorf
6-3 195 Class of 2005 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson) (Transfer from Bay City, MI High School. Rated the nation's 20th-best senior by recruiting Rob Harrington of USA Today and PrepStars.com.)
4.Kevin Durant
6-8 195 Class of 2006 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson) (Transfer from Ft. Washington, MD National Christian Academy, where he led the team to a 27-3 record in 2003-04.)
5.Vernon Macklin (shown in photo below at left below,
courtesy of The Virginian-Pilot) 6-9 195 Class of 2006 I.C. Norcom High School (Portsmouth) (Averaged 21.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3 blocks as a sophomore, earning 1st-team All-Tidewater honors. Averaged 19.2 points per-game as a freshman, earning 2nd-team All-Tidewater honors, but team only went 5-16. Rated as high as the nation's 2nd-best high school sophomore by some people! Will he ever play college basketball, or will he go straight to the NBA? As thin as he is, he needs at least 2 years of college ball. May be overrated. Hard to tell. Does not dominate on defense. On the other hand, he's just a sophomore, and Norcom would have the worst Group AAA team in the state without him. If he's so good, how come his high school team's record is so bad? Is not a force on defense, probably because he's not a center due to his build. Very quick.)
6.Marcus Ginyard 6-5 Class of 2005 PG Bishop O'Connell High (appears at left, wearing number 10)(Arlington) courtesy of photogropher Jeff Mankie of "The Journal Newspapers Online")(has already verbally committed to the University of North Carolina, despite less-than-impressive statistics. But I saw him play on 5-1-04 and 5-2-04 for the "Boo Williams Peninsula 17-And-Under Team" and all I can say is, UNC fans had better enjoy having him for a short time, because he could be NBA-ready very quickly after arriving in Chapel Hill. What a player! Rated the nation's 39th-best senior by Rob Harrington of USA Today and PrepStars.com, but I think he's much better than that.)
7.Tywon Lawson 6-0 Class of 2006 PG
8.David Palmer 6-8 Class of 2005 BF (transferred from Antioch High in Nashville, TN. Is headed to the University of Illinois).
9.Devin Johnson 6-4 Class of 2006 PG Meadowbrook High School (Richmond)(Oustanding student-athlete who lives with his brother, who is a certified public accountant. Could have more long-term potential than Tyrese Rice or Scotty Reynolds, although he's not nearly as good as either now. His mailbox has been full from recruiters even when he was a freshman last season. He appears at left below in dark jersey, courtesy of Lisa Billings of "The Richmond Times-Dispatch."
Recently received a letter from Coach K at Duke. Classy prospect.)
10.K.C. Rivers 6-4 Class of 2005 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth Of Wilson) (Headed to Clemson.)(appears in center photo below, wearing "Oak Hill" jersey.)
Recently, on 2-13-04, K.C. Rivers set an Oak Hill Academy school record by hitting 15 3-point shots in ONE GAME, scoring 45 points. The University of Virginia has offered him. He looks about 220 pounds, and had a great 3-point shot when I saw him play. Is a very good prospect.)
11.Rockwell Moody 6-10 junior Bishop O'Connell High School (Arlington)(started as a freshman. Good student who lives with his sister.)
12.Jose Garcia 6-5 senior St. Anne's-Belfield School (Charlottesville)(Native of Angola has gotten a lot of national publicity. Saw him play on 2-7-04 and he's a rare-looking athlete. Averaging over 20 ppg. as a junior.)
13.Arinze Onuaku 6-8 240 Class of 2005 power forward Episcopal High (Alexandria) (ACC prospect also plays football as a tight end. I'm trying to find out more about him.)
14.Eric Whitehurst 6-9 Class of 2005 Oaktree Academy (Williamsburg) (attending his third high school? Team was 15-1 as of 2-7-04, and he was regularly scoring over 20 points, but still, when a guy is attending his third high school, you have to wonder how serious he is academically. Saw him play for the "Boo Williams Summer League 17-And-Under Team" on 5-1-04 and 5-2-04. He's still growing.)
15.Tyrese Rice 6-1 Class of 2005 Lloyd C. Bird High School (Chesterfield) (A classic example of a guy who's a sensational high school basketball player but will not make it to the NBA due to size. No matter though. Very confident and mature for his age (16). Is a joy to watch. Maybe closer to 5-11 than 6-1. As a freshman on the varsity, averaged 14 points-per-game, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, while shooting 71% from the free-throw line. Averaged 22.4 ppg., 4 rebounds, and 6 assists while shooting 80.2% from the free-throw line as a sophomore for a 15-9 squad. The top returning scorer in the Richmond area. Midway through his junior year was averaging 23.8 ppg, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, while shooting 84.3% from the foul line. His head coach, Randy Cave, reported on 1-14-04 that "ACC schools that are recruiting him are Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Florida State. Big East schools are Notre Dame, West Virginia, and Georgetown. From the SEC, Florida is recruiting him."
Bamba Fall (#40 shown in photo below right, courtesy of Oak Hill Academy) 6-11 195 Class of 2005 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth Of Wilson) (very thin but has potential. Can block shots and is co-ordinated. Does not start, as Oak Hill may have the best high school team in the history of the state of Virginia this season. Looks like former NBA player Manute Bol. Saw him play on 1-17-04. Can really sprint up and down the court. Would be a terrific force defensively for a mid-major college. How tall will he get?)
Anthony Wright 6-5 230 Class of 2006 forward Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson) (powerful player. The fact that he was the only sophomore allowed to be on Oak Hill's varsity team tells you how good he is.)
Lewis Witcher (see photo below right)6-8 Class of 2006 center Franklin County (Rocky Mount) (Listed as tall as 6-9. Saw him play on 1-17-04 against the nation's number one ranked team, Oak Hill Academy. He scored 18 points but is weak physically. Still, I predict that some ACC schools will offer him. Important recruiting target for nearby-Virginia Tech, which MUST get him.
After the 1-17-04 Oak Hill game, a sportswriter told me that, "The best thing that could have come from Franklin County's game against Oak Hill was that Lewis Witcher saw that he could play at that level. Witcher is a legit 6-8 but at age 15 he is still very slender. Witcher has the athleticism to catch an alley-oop pass for a two-handed slam and go way up for rebounds. He still needs to work on his shooting touch and he really doesn't show a lot of fundamental moves inside yet, such as the drop step, up-and-under, etc. He seems to be a good-natured kid. I think the coaching staff was worried he might be a little soft but the Oak Hill game went a long way to allaying those concerns.")
