Chapter 33

Kevin sat starring at the most recent picture of Stevie that Jesse had sent him.  For five years, he’d punished himself for not being more involved in his life but he’d convinced himself it was better this way.  He had hurt Kristen when he’d told her about that one night but he hadn’t considered Stevie at all. It had ripped his heart out when Jesse had told him the kids at school were calling him a bastard and it had made it even worse when Jesse had ‘fixed’ the problem by listing Richie as Stevie’s father.  Richie had been right, Stevie hadn’t asked to be put in this situation and now he needed to fix it.

Putting the picture down, Kevin moved to the window to watch as Kristen played in the backyard with Mason.  They had fought that night after the restaurant and then after he’d returned from breakfast, she hadn’t spoken to him.  He knew he needed to talk to her about the situation; it would affect her as well as Mason if he decided to share custody.

The phone rang on his desk but Kevin ignored it.  The answering machine picked up.

“Hey, Kev…it’s me, Howie.  I was just calling to check on you.  Wanted to know how it went with Jesse yesterday.  Call me back when you can…if you want to talk.”

Kevin reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.  “Hey, I need a flight to Virginia….April 9th…..return?  I don’t know.  Make it open ended…..Just call me back…..no, just me…..personal.  Thanks.”
