Chaguar, weaving the forest's fibres

The Chaguar (Bromelia serra) is a plant which resembles the yucca, with sword-shaped evergreen leaves. It grows in the forest and is about 3 feet tall. The Wichi women cut its leaves with wooden spades or machete.

CHAGUAR WICHI BAGS

The wichi tribe lives in Argentina in the region of Formosa. Chaguar is a plant with thorn, from the NE of Argentina. After a process made by artisans, they obtain a fiber similar to the sisal rope. They are making those beautiful bags with it.

RESPECT D.T.L.C.usa , is trading directly with an Indian coop that insure a fair trade with the workers.

The bags are coming from different villages , that’s what explain the diversity in the designs and weavings with still the same style .

The originality is that you will never find 2 bags alike!

STEP BY STEP PROCESS

Picking:

Women go with bags [made in chaguar] to pick the plants. It’s a very hard task because they go far away and also because of chaguar’s thorns.

Peeling and cleaning:

There are different ways to separate fibers. Wichi women use the” peeling”.They peel each leave and hit each of them to “clean” them.

Whitening:

After that process , they put “clean” fibers under the sun to dry them . They become almost white.

Cord manufacture:

Now the artisan works fiber by fiber separating them with it’s fingers .She fingers it over her thigh until it becomes a strong cord.

Dyeing the cord:

For this process, they use different natural dyes made with roots, fruits, seeds, barks or leaves obtaining colors like brown gray red black and mustard.

Knitting:

Weavers use the mesh technique made with thick wooden needles .they create beautiful designs representing local plants and animals . for example ,some dotted lines ,snake’s skin, rhombuses ,fox’s leg or local type of jaguar’s skin ,pentagons, jaguar’s face or an iguana.
