What is a Patent Application and How is it Written?

A "Patent Application" is a written document submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office describing an inventive concept.

An application for patent contains a specification, various official completed forms and a cover letter. This web site and its links within www.angelfire.com/va3/patent, are directed to the patent specification, the written document that, if successfully prosecuted to patent issue, becomes the patent document itself.

A patent specification includes a title, abstract, background of the invention, priority claims, drawings and brief description of the drawings (if necessary), brief description of the invention, detailed description of the invention, best mode of practice or use of the invention, if applicable, and patent claims.
