Abstract of a Patent Application
The abstract of a patent application is chosen to be short, i.e., 100 words or less.
The abstact contains only a few sentences (1-5 typically). It provides a brief description of the invention that preferably includes words that can direct a searcher to this document, when the searcher uses the abstract index and enters text queries.
The words included in the abstract are preferably sufficiently descriptive of the invention to indicate to a searcher/reviewer the relevance of the document. The relevance may be indicated, for example, by use of words that describe the field of the invention, such as "semiconductor" or "aircraft engine". Also, words that particularly define the inventive feature(s) should be included.
