Chemical Structure Overview
Aspects of Chemical Structure Classification and Search
- Use Chime to draw structure [obtain free from internet]
- Use CAS (Chemical Abstract Services) to search subscription-based databases
- Use IUPAC nomenclature for simpler structures
- Use ECLA section C
- Use US Classes 500+ for organic; 423 for inorganic; etc. [USCS has chemical structures scattered throughout the classification system]
- Use Merck Index, CRC, Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, LOC (Divisions Q and T for Science and Technology, respectively], etc.
- Look for dates of first discovery, first isolation (e.g., from Merck Index); use these names and dates to find recent patents containing cites
