Patent searching is serious business. Most large businesses rely on intellectual property, particularly patents, to grow and thrive in an increasingly competitive world economy.

The broad field of intellectual property (which is also called “industrial property” in many countries, e.g., "Propriété industriel" ou "PI" en France) includes: patents, copyrights, trademarks and technology transfer. In the US, patents and trademarks are under the purview of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which is an agency of the Department of Commerce. Copyrights are under the purview of the Library of Congress. Technology Transfer is not entirely within the purview of any specific governmental office, but is encountered in educational and commercial institutions, hospitals, embassies, etc, and the Department of State usually needs to be contacted to ensure compliance with rules pertaining to technology transfer to particular foreign governments.

Learn about different types of patent searches and methodologies for both cursory and comprehensive searches in this web site. Identify obstacles in finding relevant documents, such as incorrectly classified patents. Learn about accountability and reliability in patent searching. And learn the parts of a patent application and how to put together an application which can eventually be issued as a patent.

This site focuses on both patent searching and patent application writing. However, overlap between the various areas of intellectual property occurs frequently, for instance, trademarked products are frequently mentioned in patents; also, patented technology is generally involved in transferred technology. Moreover, patent documents by themselves provide a remarkable historical insight into technological progress. A timeline of patents can be followed to trace progress in a particular technical field. Furthermore, they provide an excellent historical record for education not only in the sciences and engineering disciplines, but also (although to a lesser degree) in sociology, linguistics, public policy, etc.

If you are interested in having a thorough search performed on an inventive concept you may have, you can e-mail me the following information: 1) general field of concept, such as medical application, chemical composition, mechanical device, method of business practice, etc.; 2) a brief phrase or sentence(s) describing the inventive feature(s), i.e., the “improvement”; and, 3) features or aspects of the inventive concept that you regard as “known” to the best of your knowledge.

This information is held in confidence in all of my interactions. Note that in order for a searcher to perform a search on a patent concept, the exact novel feature(s) do not necessarily need to be specified in detail in the search request (although it certainly helps!), since the competent searcher will encompass all appropriate areas relevant to the inventive concept, thereby including documents directed to the feature(s) likely to be intended by the requester.

In response to your search request (your inventive description can, of course, be very broad), I will e-mail you a price quote (first-time clients will be given an initial 10% discount, see the “What are the Costs and Turnaround?” link) and an estimated time to complete the search. If the price quote is acceptable, the search will be conducted and the report will be e-mailed as a Word97 attachment (see the “What is Provided in a Search Report?” link). Payment can then be sent by regular mail.
