Patent Search and Application Writing Services

Welcome visitor!

I have been an independent patent searcher and patent application writer for the past two years. Before that, I was a Patent Examiner at the USPTO for nearly 11 years mostly in the chemical and electrical arts (US classes 156 and 428), having issued over 600 patents as a junior and primary examiner during that time. Whew!, with all that experience, you'd expect that I would have stayed on as a lifer! But with all that production pressure, you know, and other "interests" that came up (like having a different "life" for one thing), I decided to disconnect from that matrix to be able to interface with it in other, more enjoyable and productive ways.

My personal interests include learning technology and conveying technology to others. In order to make the information to my clients clear, I also spend much of my time studying various aspects of linguistics. An English dictionary and a synonym book are always close to me. The internet and many other resources (like the Library of Congress and NIH) are also close by. In order to be able to acquire and assimilate a wide range of technology, various organizational schemes and tools are essential, and they are close by as well.

Whether the technology is well known or is "ground-breaking", it can be searched and reported, so that the "state-of-the-art" can be ascertained. Although I am not an "expert" in all fields of technology (show me someone who "is" and I'll show you a debutant in some "technical area", i.e., an "expert", by definition has no need to search their area(s) of expertise), my expertise continues to expand into various "new" areas.

For those with limited funds, whatever idea you may have for an invention, the internet provides a significant source of information. If the invention has an "earth-shattering" basis, perhaps you might want to visit the Nobel Prize winners web site (use Ixquick.com to find it). Learn about the winners in the Chemistry, Physics and Medicine/Physiology categories. Then, knowing an approximate starting point for the technical field, you can use the terms or names in search queries in the databases provided free by the USPTO and EP web sites.

As this site is being built, you will learn what is involved in conducting a thorough patent search and what my methodology is, so that clients can feel confident in using the search report they receive to seek the most comprehensive patent protection for their concept.

One of the essential parts of a patent application is a discussion of the background of an invention at the beginning of the specification. A thorough search provides this information. Also, the writer of the patent application can use this information (i.e., the "prior art") to explain the need for and the distinguishing features of the invention.

My intention in building this web site is to share essential aspects of patent searching (at least what I consider "arguably" to be the essentials) as well as providing my services at reasonable costs and turnaround times. One essential aspect is to be adequately skillful in navigating the patent literature using classification schemes, such as being able to use at least the USCS and ECLA classification schemes. Skills in surfing the "net" and being able to distinguish nuances in the arts are also essential tools of competent searchers. Foreign language abilities and writing skills are also helpful.

If you have a search request or any question or comment, please e-mail me any time (especially if you spot a typographical or other language or linguistic error). Please visit frequently! (latest update: 20031106)
