Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)

In late 1997, Stanley B. Prusiner received the 1997 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of "Prions", a newly coined word that has been pronounced "pree-awns" by some and, by others, "pry-awns". The following web site describes prions and the research leading to the Prize: http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1997/illpres/novel-inf.html

The use of this newly coined term is increasing in the patent and patent publication databases. In the US Patent and Publication databases, the use of the term has increased by about 30-100% between the patents searched and the publications searched, i.e., use of the search term "prion$" in toto (all of the document), limited to the claims and limited to the abstract, has increased by 30-100%. That is quite an increase in usage and it clearly indicates a significant trend.
