Welcome to the Kunsan Information Website!

This web page was designed to give airmen an idea of what they'll experience upon their arrival to Kunsan AB.

Welcome to the home of the Wolf Pack! I received my assignment for Kunsan AB and wanted to find out more information about the base but couldn't find much useful information about it so I wanted to give others an idea of what's really here and to clear up some of the rumors and other gray areas. I hope you find this useful. If you have any questions, send me an email and I'll do my best to answer.

Here is some general information on the base along with a bit of information to clear up some rumors.

Upon my arrival to Kunsan AB, I noticed that the facilities are pretty old, and the base is very small. To my surprise the vehicles are driven on the right side of the road with left hand drive cars unlike Japan. I didn't have to worry about driving much though because you can only own a car if you are an E6 (Technical Sergeant) or higher. The primary way to get around is to walk or ride a bicycle, some airmen have scooters. You have to take a safety course to be able to ride one though. The vegetation is different with some different shaped trees and things. There are a lot of mosquitoes here but that is controlled by insecticides, and bug zappers just outside some of the facilities.

Living over here is kind of scary knowing that I am just 100 miles from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). North Korea has been flexing their muscles lately by flaunting all their nukes they have prepared. We are definitely in range for their ballistic missiles, and chemical weapons. We are also aware that North Korea has more Special Forces troops than we have people on this base. Their is another base nearby which is Osan air base, it is North of here and is considered a speed bump for North Korea if they were to attack. Luckily I'll only be here for 12 months, plus I get a 30 day vacation after 5.5 months, called a mid-tour.

When I was asking around for information about Kunsan I was told that it smells in Korea. I haven't really noticed that it smells all that bad so that's a good thing. I haven't tasted much of the food here so I can't really discuss that yet but I'm told to stay away from the Kim chi. They have soju juice here which is some pretty potent alcohol and most people don't realize how much they've had to drink until they try to stand up and fall over. The alcohol is almost tasteless which makes it easier to become intoxicated, and the percentage of alcohol may be higher depending on where you are visiting because its not exactly regulated. Drinking age on base and in Korea is 20.

On base you can use U.S. currency, and all of the outlets in the dorm rooms and around base are standard 110v just like in the U.S. so you won't need a transformer or anything like that. As far as the internet goes, there is dialup internet available which takes about a week or two to get activated and also DSL which has about 1-2 month wait list. Prices are pretty high, similar to back in the states. Electronics aren't super cheap as some people say, but clothes are pretty cheap.

There is a maid service in the dorms and it runs about $21 per month for full service which includes, laundry, ironing uniforms, shining boots, and cleaning the room. Its a pretty good deal for less than $1 a day and saves you the hassle of fighting for washing machines and all that good stuff. Some advice if you are going to take pictures during your stay, don't take pictures of Koreans without their permission. My buddy told me his friend had a shoe throw at him for it. If you want to take pictures on base, you can't take them on the flight line. There is a small hospital, basically they told us if we get hurt bad they may have enough supplies to keep us alive long enough to get us to Osan where we can get some real medical attention.

Here are a few things that you may enjoy to keep you busy during your tour at Kunsan AB.

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of the dorms, vehicles and facilities.
