Mermaid Fins

Here is what we will be making:

Base by Silly Janine

Requirements:
  • PSP 7 (other will probably work)
  • A base body
  • Imagination
  • Plenty of time and patience...no distractions.
  • Love for mermaids.

Step 1: Prepare your base for the fins, by adding a new layer..name it fins.

Step 2: draw a rough draft of the fins from the waist of the body...like this:

Step 3: Don't worry about cleaning up any pixles except for the general shape of the tail. Now make sure it is closed completely and flood fill with either the same color or a shade lighter...I am using the same color. After you have done that, go to the layer of the base itself and erase the rest of the leg that is showing...now it should look like this:

Step 4: Grab your retouch tool (lok like a hand) set the tool options (optional..this is what I used..experiment) on darken, 1 pixel, 100 hardness, 85 opacity, step 1, density 100.

Now go in loops starting from the top (waist) of the tail so it look like scales. Yours should look something like this:

Step 5: Now change to lighten...my setting are as follows:

Now, lighten in the center of each scale..this only takes a second really. Here is what mine looks like:

Step 6: Now draw your design for the fin part of the tail. I simply drew lines with the darken tool and then used the lighten between them to make them look a little more 3D...we're not finished yet!

Step 7: Now you'll need to select the entire tail and fin...doesn't mater your method just as long as the marching ants are marching around the ENTIRE tail. What we will do next is to to Effects/Blur/Soften.

Step 8: Ok do the darken and lighten with the retouch once again. Concentrating on making it look 3D.

That's all...just add hair, a top (or not), some bubbles perhaps and you now have made a mermaid of your very own...

Don't know how to make bubbles you say? I have just what you need.... The Bubble tutorial.
