leave. "Go fix you plane and get home to your girls." 
"I will, thanks." Dan ran back to the field he had made his landing at, he installed the fuel 
pump and it was about an hour before sunset, it was only a little over an hour to his home
field so he climbed back on board his small plane and started the engine.

toward the east. Dan's small plane was just visible over the trees. 
"Good I'll go start dinner and tell Jan he is back." Laya told her sister.

town. 
"How is school going, did you get a good grade on your project?" 
"Yes, I got an A, Jan  said it was very good work and I should think about going to
college some day." 
"If we ever get that dozer up the mountain, you can go to any college you want to

Dan cleaned up and was presentable when Jan arrived.

"They are down here, then the pain goes up higher, and around to my back sometimes."

Dan thought this sounded like female stuff. "You should tell Jan she can tell you what to
do about it."

That afternoon when Laya was walking back from school, she fell over the pain was so

Dan was glad the storm was easing off, he guided the plane around the worst of the dark

Dan had radioed ahead for a ambulance to be at the airport. He taxied his small plane
up as close to the building as possible. Jumped out in the pouring rain and carried
Laya to the make shirt ambulance. There was a nurse and a doctor waiting. 
"You have suspected appendicitis?"
"Yes, she is having pain in the lower abdomen, it has  progressed since it started." Dan 
explained. 
"One of you may ride with her." 
Dan wanted to go but he had to stay with Nina or Jan which ever didn't go. 
"You go with her, Nina said knowing Jan was helping keep Laya calm." 
"We'll catch up, go." Dan nodded. 

Dan borrowed a truck from one of the men at the airport. Most everyone knew him from
his frequent stops there for cargo or sometimes passengers. 
"Do they have a chapel at the hospital?" Nina asked, knowing she hadn't worshiped in a 
long time but feeling it would help more if she prayed in God's house. 
"Yes, this is South America the hospital was founded by a religious order. A lot of the 
nurses are still nuns." 
Dan rushed to the emergency room, Jan was pacing waiting for him and Nina. 
"She is in the operating room, they said if she had gotten here any later her appendix
would have ruptured." Jan looked scared and Dan hugged her hard. Nina leaned into
his side at the news and he wrapped an arm around her as well. 

Dan held both of them for several minutes. He was feeling helpless now that he had 
arrived. When he was flying the plane in the storm he had at least been doing something.
"Can we go to the chapel?" 
"I'll as where it is." 
Jan exhaled and allowed him step away from them. "Did your parents  raise you in a 
particular faith?" she turned to Nina.
"Yes, Lutheran but we haven't been to church since we left Sweden." 

Dan lead the way to the hospital chapel. He had been raised Catholic so he kneeled to
pray, Jan and Nina took seats and prayed quietly. There was only one other person in 
the chapel and he looked even more scared than Dan felt. 

They went back to the waiting area after ten minutes. Dan felt it helped calm everyone,
he knew it couldn't hurt to ask for God's help. He wasn't sure it was going to help 
coming from him. 

Laya was in surgery for an hour. 
"She is doing well, she is a strong young woman." the doc came out and told them.
"You took a great risk flying here in the storm, but is probably saved her life. You
may see her soon. The nurse will come and tell you when she is awake." 
"Thanks, Doc." 
"Thank you, doctor." 
Nina was all smiles and wanted to laugh, she was so relieved. She settled for hugging 
Jan. Jan looked over her head at Dan, she was smiling too. He nodded, and exhaled,
"I'm exhausted, hungry and wet after we see Laya we need to get some food and
dry off." 

They were only allowed to stay with Laya a few minutes. She smiled up at all of them
and squeezed her sisters hand. 
"I'll be here when you wake up again." Nina promised. 
"You scared us kido, don't keep everything to yourself from now on, OK?"
Laya nodded, "I won't."
"I'll bring you a book for later." Jan said knowing Laya's love of reading.


Dan wanted to take his girls for a meal and dry clothes. He was already going to have to 
use some of the money they had been saving for the dozer lift, for the hospital bill, so
what was a few more dollars for dry clothes.  
"Come on, there is a place across the street we can get a few things." 

Nina was excited momentarily, she hadn't been to a real story in ages. "May I really 
choose new clothes top and bottom?"
"Sure and find a nice outfit for your sister too." 
"Dan I'm almost dry already, I don't need anything."
"We are going to be here a few days, do get something else to wear."
