Cowboys slip past Eagles in preseason defensive stalemate
The Dallas Cowboys opened their preseason schedule with a win on the road at the Philadelphia Eagles. For the most part Dallas played with the intensity and commitment that coach Parcells was hoping they would, and they gave a good account of themselves. For Parcells, the victory was important for 'morale purposes', but critically for the confidence of the team and quarterback Quincy Carter. If there was still any lingering doubts who would lead the Cowboys for the regular season, those doubts will be erased after the coach benched starter Chad Hutchinson before half time and turned to the more mobile, versatile Carter.
The game was a defensive trenchfight from start to finish, with neither offense moving the ball particularly well. From the Cowboys perspective, there were a few nice drives, and while Dallas didn't reach the red zone at any stage of the game, they did make progress into the Eagles half more than a few times. Billy Cundiff hit a 43 yard field goal to tie the game for the Cowboys just before half time, and in a second half shutout of the Eagles, the Dallas defense stepped up to show their real potential. Rookie Terrence Newman picked off a stray pass from Donovan McNabb and took it into the end zone for the only touchdown of the game. Newman, combined with Roy Williams and Darren Woodson give Dallas one of the most formidable secondaries in the MPL this year.
On offense Joey Galloway was the most impressive receiver, and with the Eagles attempting to double team Galloway during the game Coach Parcells moved the receiver around in order to get him open. Galloway proved his status as the number one receiver on the Cowboys roster by pulling in some tremendous catches.
Cowboys practise in Dallas heat
The Cowboys returned to Dallas in preparation for the start of the new MPL PS2 season baking in the Texas heat. Parcells, concerned at whether the temperatures would adversely affect some of the older members of the team, moved the practise indoors on Monday.
