LATANA

Gourd Artist

No matter what theme is represented, or what method was utilized in obtaining that theme, Latana’s mission remains true: The creation of visually striking and functionally viable gourd vessels.

Perhaps fifty-percent of Latana’s gourd baskets and gourd covered bowls are Native American themed. The images on these gourds are rooted in the symbolism and lore of various Indian Tribes and Nations. The likes of the gourd “Earthly Elements,” which renders a gourd in the style of a pottery jar, are rarely seen. Unlike most of her works, the gourds “Live Long and Prosper” and “How the West Was Won” are not colored at all but done only with carving and pyrography (wood burning). Many of Latana’s gourds are extensively carved, as in “Baby’s New Shoes”.

Another of her themes is the horse, an example of which is the gourd entitled “Eternal Dance.” Latana has for many years owned and ridden horses, at one time in competition. Perhaps a quarter of her body of gourd baskets and gourd covered bowls has been with the horse theme of several recurring styles (though no two are alike) such as “The Dancers”.

The jewel or mini gourds are done in varied themes with a predominant geometric design and can be fashioned as earrings or pendants. The 1-½ inch ivy baskets are much sought after for their beauty and diminutive nature.

The remainder of Latana’s work is often of a unique and non-traditional nature, examples of which are currently displayed on this website.
