Bios
Members of United with Youth are invited to fill out the biography
form to be posted on the website to help our community put a face to
our wonderful teens.
| My name is Molly
Barnett. I’m 16, in the 11th grade, and I
go to Cave Spring High School. I’ve been involved in United
with Youth for about two years. Last year, I did National
Youth Service Day. I helped start the YWCA mentoring program.
I’ve been to Keepin’ it Real and leadership training this
year. United with Youth gives me a chance to really get
involved in the community and make a difference. Youth are an
important part of the community, with opinions and ideas as
important as those of adults.
My hobbies are dancing, tutoring, after-school clubs, and
volunteer work. My extracurricular activities are dance (jazz
and ballet), French club, Spanish club, German club, and Key
club. I’m also the junior class vice president at school. My
favorite movie is Braveheart and my favorite books are Gone
with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice. I don’t
have a favorite singer or group and I listen to every kind of
music except rap.
I want to be a veterinarian for large animals. I would like
to have a career that I truly enjoy and care about. I would
like to be the kind of person that has seen and done and knows
everything. I also want to help others and make a difference
in other people’s lives. I want to be independent and able
to change the things I don’t like. I’m usually a good
listener and I love doing things for others.

| My name is Katie
Bush and I’m in 10th grade at Salem High
School. I’ve been involved in United with Youth since
National Youth Service Day last year when I volunteered to
work for Kiwanis pancake breakfast. I tutor at the YWCA.
United with Youth is great because young people make all ages
smile. We need youth leaders because youth people can help out
a lot.
My hobbies are singing, dancing, drama/theater, and being
with friends. I’m involved in softball, character counts,
FCA, and the Keyette Club. I have lots of favorite movies and
books, and my favorite singer is Mariah Carey. I don’t
really have a favorite kind of music, but one day, I hope to
be live the NYC and be in the music business. I want to have a
successful job and be in a famous Broadway show. I’m
friendly, and one of the best things about me is that I’m
friends with everyone.

| I’m Kalia
Elam and I’m in 11th grade at Salem High
School. I’ve been involved with United with Youth since the
beginning of the school year. I helped start the Interfaith
Youth Council. I also attend leadership trainings and Keepin’
It Real events. I am a mentor at the YWCA. United with Youth
is great because it is a great time for young adults to get
together and do positive things. I think we need youth leaders
to show the younger youth positive role models.
My hobbies are sports, friends, and traveling. I’ve
involved in basketball, the business club, the Interact club,
and the FCA. My favorite movies are Love and Basketball,
Crossroads, and Lesson Before Dying. I enjoy all
singers and listen to every kind of music except classical.
When I grow up, I wan to go to college and study pre-med or
pre-law. I want to be a doctor and/or lawyer.
Some of the best things about me are my outgoing spirit and
positive outlook on life and my willingness to help others. My
dream for the future is one of curing world hunger and
achieving world peace. I want to become a doctor and help
children so that they may live a healthy life.

| My name is Jean
Hartman and I’m in 10th grade at Patrick
Henry High School. I’ve been involved with United with Youth
for two years. Last year, I did FaithWalk and National Youth
Service Day. This year, I’m a YWCA tutor and I’ve done
Keepin’ It Real activities. United with Youth gets teens
involved in the community. I think we need more youth leaders
to get involved with more activities.
Some of the best things about me are that I am dedicated
and have a sense of humor. I enjoy talking and I love meeting
new people. I am hyper, but at the same time, I can be
serious. My hobbies are horseback riding, chatting on-line,
talking on the phone, reading, watching TV, and yoga, and
wait, one more thing: homework. I’m involved in FBLA,
horseback riding, and yoga. I don’t really have a favorite
movie or book, or a favorite singer or group. I either like
them or I don’t. My favorite kinds of music are country and
R & B and some Christian.
When I’m older, I want to teach and to work with teens.
My dreams for the future are to go to college, get a job, get
married, and maybe have a couple kids here and there. In my
lifetime, I hope I accomplish knowing that I tried to make all
my dreams come true. I also hope to figure out where I am
spiritually.

My name is Shaun
Henderson and I’m a senior at Patrick Henry. I am a
YWCA mentor and I’ve participated in leadership trainings
and Keepin’ It Real. I really like this organization because
I really feel like I’m helping out here. We need youth
leaders because we need to teach people responsibility early
in life. I have a job at the Science Museum of Western
Virginia. My hobbies are sports, music, and games. I’m
involved in pride team and PCI. My favorite book is Oliver
Twist and my favorite movie is Dude, Where’s My Car?
My favorite singer is Usher and my favorite kinds of music are
R&B and rap. My dream for the future is to be an award
winning photojournalist like Gordon Parks. Some of the best
things about me are my personality and my willingness to help
out. One of things I want to accomplish in my lifetime is a
good career and a family.

| My name is Natalie
Moore and I’m a senior at William Fleming High
School. I’ve been involved in United with Youth since
September. I went to Kingdom Life for United with Youth
meeting and I went to Radford. I am a tutor and I’m involved
in the Interfaith Youth Council and leadership trainings. In
United with Youth, we get to meet new people and create new
friendships. We get to help out in the schools, communities,
and churches. We need to be examples for the younger kids so
that they can see positive teens doing something good.
My hobbies are talking on the phone, going to church,
cooking, cleaning, and reading my Bible. I work as a daycare
aide at the Light of the World Christian Daycare. I’m
involved in the Student Government Association and the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes. My favorite movie is Coming
to America and my favorite book is the Bible. My favorite
kinds of music are R&B and gospel, and my favorite singers
are Musig Soul Child, Kirk Franklin, and Mary Mary.
Some of the best things about me are that I’m cheerful
and outgoing. I love everybody. I’m a good listener and I
love to talk. I want to be a cosmotologist and have my own
beauty salon with hair, nails, makeup, and massage. I also
want my own restaurant. My dreams for the future are to
complete Dudley Cosmetology School and to begin saving for my
own shop. I want to be successful in everything and have my
kids completely taken care of.

Rogers. I go to William Fleming and I’m in 11th
grade. This is my first day at United with Youth. I’m going
to volunteer with children. United with Youth is great because
of the participation and fellowship with others. I believe
that we need youth leaders because they represent the future.
I have a job at the Valley View Mall Chick-Fil-A. My hobbies
are writing music and reading. One thing you need to know
about me is that I am a great leader.
My favorite movie is Back to the Future and my
favorite book is The Biographies of Martin Luther King, Jr.
My favorite rap artists are NOW and Wu-Tang Clan. My favorite
kind of music is hip-hop. I plan to be a hip-hop artist and
journalist so that I can reach out to inspire others. My
dreams for the future are music success. One thing I want to
accomplish in my life is family structure.

Rood and I’m 18 years old. I’m a senior at Patrick
Henry High School. I’m been involved with United with Youth
since last summer, when I was a summer intern with Family
Service. I’ve participated in Keepin’ It Real, leadership
development training and planning for National Youth Service
Day. United with Youth helps young people find their place in
the community. We need youth leaders because everyone has
something to contribute to the community. The more people
involved, the better, more diverse ideas come out of it.
I enjoy swimming and reading. I’m involved in my church
youth group, in swimming, and in the Greater Roanoke Valley
Character Coalition. My favorite movie is Dangerous
Liaisons and my favorite books is While Oleander.
My favorite singer is Fiona Apple. I like alternative and rap
music. I want to eventually own my own business, be a lawyer,
and serve in an elected office. My dreams for the future are
to be an active and contributing community member. One of the
best things about me is that I am a hard worker. One of the
things I want to accomplish in my lifetime is to speak three
languages with fluency.

| I’m Amy
Sheppard. I go to Salem High School and I’m a
sophomore. Last year, I did National Youth Leadership Day. I
am a YWCA tutor and I’ve been a part of Keepin’ It Real.
United with Youth is great because it gives me a sense of
accomplishment. I love feeling like I helped out my community
in some way. It also gives teens a chance to volunteer. Our
youth leaders can be a role model for other teens so they can
see how much fun volunteering can be.
I play tennis and I love to scrapbook. I’m involved in
the Keyettes club. My favorite movie is Grease. I
listen to pretty much everything when it comes to music. In
the future, I want to move out of Salem and be a magazine
editor/writer. I also want to go to college. I’m nice and
friendly. I hope to travel and see new places.

Sinnes and I attend Cave Spring High School. I’m 16
and in the 11th grade. I’m a YWCA mentor and I’ve
done leadership trainings. I think it’s great to help out.
It gives you a good feeling knowing you made a difference in
someone’s life. We need youth leaders so we have a better
ratio of youth leaders to kids. I love baseball. My favorite
movie is It. My favorite music artist is Eminem. I like
rock and rap. My dream for the future is to go to college and
become a lawyer. Some of the best things about me are that I
am creative, funny, and intelligent. One of the things I’d
like to accomplish in my life is to go into space.

Wooten. I’m 16 and in 12th grade at
Fleming. I’ve been involved in United with Youth since
National Youth Service Day last year. I’m a mentor at YWCA
and I’m involved in our leadership trainings. I’ve also
been to Keepin’ It Real. United with Youth is great because
it gives you a chance to interact with other people that are
your age and those that are even younger. I think that we need
youth leaders to show adults that not all young people are
into bad things or up to no good. Some of the best things
about me are my personality, my writing ability, and my
wanting to help. One thing I want to accomplish in my lifetime
is to make a difference somehow.
I work as a cashier. I like computers and I enjoy writing.
I’m involved in FBLA, SGA, Key Club, and St. Matthew’s
Youth Group. I am the senior class secretary, and I have been
inducted into Who’s Who Among High School Students.
My favorite books are written by Maya Angelou. I like funny
movies. I don’t really have a favorite singer or group. My
favorite kinds of music are gospel, R&B, and rap. I want
to be a pediatrician. My dreams are to go to my first choice
college.
