Constitution and By-laws


MISSION STATEMENT:
 
Looking for an Echo is a men's a cappella group that symbolizes the leadership and opportunities Roanoke College offers its students.    Its purpose is to enrich the social and artistic experience of its members and the community as a whole.

ARTICLE   I:  MEMBERSHIP

Section 1
Group members are encouraged to participate in the Roanoke College Choir.  However, membership in the college choir is not mandatory, provided that the membership of LFE does not exceed twelve.

Section 2
Members join through auditions held by the group.  The current members select new members by a 2/3 vote.

Section 3
A member can be removed from the group by a unanimous vote.

 

ARTICLE   II:  LEADERSHIP POSITIONS
Section 1
The leadership positions of this group are: 
  • Musical Director
  • Assistant Director
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Webmaster
  • Faculty Advisor
Section 2
The positions of  Assistant Director, Secretary, Treasurer, and Webmaster shall be elected by a majority vote of the group.  The position of Musical Director will be filled by the Assistant Director whenever the position becomes vacant.  Elections will take place when the position becomes vacant, when there is a unanimous vote to replace the position, or at the resignation of the current officer.

Section 3
Officers should resign in a manner that allows ample time for the group to fill the position.

Section 4
Faculty advisor shall be elected by a majority vote when the position becomes vacant.
 

ARTICLE   III:  REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES
Section 1
Attendance is required at all rehearsals unless valid reason is provided to the Musical Director at least 24 hours in advance, or in cases of emergency. 

Section 2
Attendance at all performances and recording sessions is required unless valid reason is provided to the Musical Director at least one week in advance, or in cases of emergency.  [Concerns with concert / recording dates should be addressed during business meetings.]

Section 3
No LFE engagement shall be in conflict with Roanoke College Choir functions.

Section 4
LFE in no way approves of any consumption of outside substances affecting performances, recording sessions, or rehearsals.  Problems with this policy will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
 

ARTICLE  IV:  FUNDING
All finances shall be handled in accordance to the guidelines outlined in the Roanoke College Student Organization Handbook.
ARTICLE  V:  AMENDMENTS
Section 1
Proposed amendments to or by-laws of this constitution shall be adopted by a unanimous vote by members at a regular meeting. 

Section 2
Amendments shall go into effect immediately following adoption, unless otherwise stated in the amendment itself.
 
 

BY-LAWS


ARTICLE  I:  DUTIES OF LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

Section 1:  Musical Director
  • Introduces new music subject to final group decision.
  • Primarily responsible for teaching new music.
  • Must be a competant musician and pianist.
  • Responsible for ordering or arranging music.
  • Primary liaison with faculty advisor.
  • Organizes rehearsals. 
  • Shares certain business responsibilities with Assistant Director.
Section 2:  Assistant Director
  • Primarily responsible for booking concerts and recording sessions.
  • Must be a competant musician and pianist.
  • Secondary liaison with faculty advisor.
  • Informs group of confirmed engagements.  Provides the Webmaster with a list of confirmed engagements to be posted on the official website.
  • Shares certain musical responsibilities with Musical Director.
Section 3:   Secretary
  • Primarily responsible for providing copies of printed and recorded material when deemed necessary.
  • Assists Webmaster in basic archival duties.
  • Primarily responsible for taking notes on group discussions when necessary.
  • General organizational skills are required for the position.
Section 4:  Treasurer
  • Signs checks.
  • Tracks group expences and manages the LFE's financial accounts.
  • Primarily responsible for group sales (i.e. CDs and posters) and purchaces.
  • Reports financial status to the group upon request.
Section 5:  Webmaster
  • Maintains the official website:  archiving pictures and fanmail, updating concert schedule, amending the official constitution.
  • Primarily responsible for the design of electronic media and certain printed material.
  • General organizartional skills are required.
  • Must be proficient with Netscape Composer and / or HTML code.  Other basic computer skills are required.
