State of Virginia High School Seniors In 2004-05!

At left: Bosco Williams of Alleghany High. At right: Todd Nolen of Hampton High.
1.Elan Lewis
5-10 205 RB Phoebus High School
(Not tall, but keeps low to the ground, which makes it hard for defenders to get a good shot at him, and has powerful thighs that defenders bounce off of, much like Emmitt Smith as a high-schooler. Almost impossible to tackle one-on-one below the waist, due to his leg power. 384 yards rushing as a freshman, 1,866 yards rushing as a sophomore, and 2,474 more as a junior, giving him a 3-year total of 4,724 yards on the ground. With 2,813 yards rushing as a senior, he could become the leading ground-gainer in the history of high school football in Virginia, for all classifications.)

2.Vicqual Hall
5-11 180 QB Gretna High School
(State Player-Of-The-Year as a junior in Group AA. Started as a freshman on a 11-1 team, throwing 14 TD
passes/ also ran and passed for a total of 1,546 yards; as a soph, made first team All-Group AA at QB, passing for 2,184
yards and 20 TD's and running for 1,045 yards and 12 TD's; "Street And Smith's College Football
Yearbook" lists him as one of the nation's top 50 rising juniors. Has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. As a junior, led his team this year to a 14-0 mark, as the Gretna Hawks scored 694 points, the second-highest total in Virginia High School League history, a 49.5 points-per-game average. Also a good punter. Only needs 2,311 yards as a senior next season to break the career record for most yards running and passing by a high school player in the state of Virginia. The question is: is he tall enough to play QB at UVa, or will UVa move him to another position? Too quick and talented to sit on the bench in college, even as a freshman.

3.Kevin Crawford
6-4 265 OG
Gar-Field High School (Woodbridge) Has already verbally committed to the University of Virginia

4.Todd Nolen

6-2 175 WR
Hampton High School (Made second-team All-State in Group AAA at wide receiver. 1st-team All-Region at WR and DB this season as a junior, catching 28 passes for 721 yards and 11 touchdowns. Also plays baseball for Hampton. His high school coach overrates him, but he's still a great prospect.)

5.Justin Carrington

6-1 192 HB Liberty (Bealton, Virginia) (unlike many junior prospects in Virginia, Carrington is truly an outstanding student. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in the regular season as a junior. 1st-team All-Northwestern District as a JR this year.)

6.Cody Broadus
6-3 210 QB Warwick High (Newport News)
(plays for Michael Vick's alma mater. Picked by 'The Sporting News' as one of 3 top rising juniors from the state of Virginia. I saw him play on 11-7-03 as a junior. Throws nice spirals. His stats aren't padded with a lot of safe, short passes: he throws the ball way downfield in the Warwick offense.)

7.Greg Boone
6-4 250 QB/FS Oscar Smith High (Chesapeake)(2nd-team All-Eastern region as a defensive back as a junior this 2003-04 school year. First-team All-Tidewater defensive back. Saw him play for Oscar Smith High, and my guess is that he'll be an outside linebacker in college).

8.Jameel Sewel
6-2 200 QB Hermitage High School (Richmond)(Has committed to the University of Virginia.)

9.Kavell Connor
6-3 190 RB-DB Manchester (Midlothian)(First-team All-Region as a soph and as a junior at defensive back. Also made first-team All-Metro as a DB as a junior. On offense, ran for 662 yards as a freshman, 1,163 yards as a soph, and 1,223 yards as a junior, giving him 3,048 yards rushing with one year of high school ball remaining. Will he play strictly defensive back in college? As of 12-29-03 Connor had "no early offers as of this moment. Has a lot of schools who are very interested," says the Manchester High head coach. Looked like a very smooth runner when I saw him play. For some reason, recruiters don't seem that impressed yet.)

10.Deveon Simmons
6-1 200 LB Landstown (Virginia Beach)(Made first-team All-State in Group AAA. Eastern Region Defensive Player-Of-The-Year as a junior this year, with 90 tackles, 52 assists, 32 tackles for losses, and six sacks. The Landstown Eagles started off 13-0 this year, then lost in the Group AAA-Division 6 state championship game: in Virginia, Group AAA-Division 6 are the state's largest high schools. Saw him play on 11-21-03 against Oscar Smith High, and on 12-13-03 against Westfield High.)

11.Ed Wang
6-5 260 TE Stone Bridge High School (Loudoun)(Has already commited to Virginia Tech. Did not make All-Dulles district first-team as an 11th-grader this season, however...)

12.Darryl Gresham
6-3 230 LB William Fleming High School (Roanoke)
(Has committed to the University of Virginia. Helped lead the Colonels to the Group 4 state championship game as a junior this year, while earning 2nd-team All-State All-Group AA honors.)

13.Victor Harris
6-0 194 RB-DB Highland Springs High School (scored 37 TD's as a junior, rushing for 2,200 yards, and made first-team All-State in Group AAA. Appears at left,  courtesy of "The Richmond Times-Dispatch," wearing number 7. Like too many junior prospects, he may have to go to a prep-school ext year due to his age.)

14.John Phillips
6-6 230 TE Bath County High School
(Made All-State 1st-team Associated Press All-Group A as a sophomore, and 2nd-team All-Group A as a junior. Also has been a basketball star as a freshman and sophomore. Committed to UVa. Injured toward end of 2003-04 junior football year, but caught 25 passes for 495 yards and six TDs.)

15.Aaron Clark
6-6 225 DE Rockbridge High (Lexington)(once Roanoke Times And World News sportswriter Doug Doughty publicized him, he began getting the recognition he deserved as a blue-chip prospect, and was then picked by the "Virginia High School Coaches Association" as a second-team All-State Group AA defensive end. Competes in the shot put and discus in track and field, also.)

16.Pat Sheil
6-6 250 L Centreville High (Chantilly)(his team had a disappointing year, but he looked like a Division 1-A prospect when I saw him play. Despite huge publicity and size, he did not make first-team All-Concorde district as an 11th-grader this season, however...)

17.Jeffrey Fitzgerald
6-4 255 TE/DE Hermitage High School (Richmond)(as a junior in 2003-04, was first-team All-Colonial District at DE, 2nd-team all-district as a tight end, and 2nd team All-Metro as a defensive end. High school is becoming a yearly-producer of Division 1-A talent.)

18.Antonio North
6-4 275 OL North Stafford High School (Falmouth) (Started as a freshman on a playoff squad. Team has a loaded junior class now. First-team All-District as an 11th-grader in 2003-04.)

19.Michael Pigrim
5-11 205 LB-FB Hopewell High School (Team won Division 5 state championship and he made 2nd-team All-Central District at linebacker. Solid-looking ballplayer. Saw him play in the state title game and was impressed...slightly.)

20.Carlos Wade
6-3 185 WR Laurel Park High (Martinsville)(second-team "Virginia High School Coaches Association" All-State Group AA as a junior. Made "The Roanoke Times And World News" First-Team All-Timesland Squad as a junior, "tying former Lord Botetourt receiver Jared White's Timesland record for receptions in a season with 83. Wade was the bright spot on a 1-9 team, piling up 1,020 receiving yards and nine TD catches," says "The Roanoke Times."

21.Steven Friday
6-5 215 DE Phoebus High (Has the necessary grades. Saw him play against Heritage as a junior. Made first-team All-State in Group AAA, the largest high schools in Virginia, with 17 quarterback sacks, 112 total tackles, and 32 tackles for losses.)

22.Alex Fields
6-6 250 TE Broad Run High School (UVa committment)

23.Cameron Martin
6-2 170 QB George Washington High School
(Has committed to Virginia Tech. 1st-team All-Western District as a sophomore; wears number 10, team captain as a junior. Western District Defensive Player-Of-The-Year as a junior during 2003-04. However, it's hard to say how much this means. The district isn't nearly as good as it used to be, and GW-Danville has a mediocre program.)

24.Tyrone Brackins
6-3 185 SS Edison High School (Alexandria)(First-team All-National district as a JR this season, with 75 total tackles. Wears number one.)

25.Rico Reynolds
6-0 186 RB Gretna High School(Still another Division 1-A prospect from Gretna's loaded junior class. Ran for 1,089 yards and 20 TD's as a junior this season. 2nd-team All-Region.)

26.Jamar Jackson
5-10 175 DB Bethel High School (Hampton)
(First-team All-Peninsula district as a junior in 2003-04.)

27.Aljamont Rose
5-11 225 RB Sussex Central High School (Waverly)(Known to friends as "Aljamont Price." Made Associated Press All-State 1st-team All-Group A as a junior. Ran for 1,907 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Tigers, who went 15-0 and won the Division 1, Group A state championship by scoring a Group A single-season record 683 points, or 45.5 points-per-game. Also ran for 1,411 yards on just 127 carries, good for 18 scores, as a sophomore, and rushed 68 times for 580 yards and 7 scores as a freshman. This gives him career totals of 3,819 yards and 52 touchdowns rushing with one full season left to play. Has continued to get taller and heavier with each varsity year, and also plays linebacker.)

28.Thomas Johnson
6-2 240 OT Phoebus High School (Hampton)
(First-team All-Peninsula district as a JR this year.)

29.Kevin Cousins
6-4 190 WR Huguenot High School (Richmond)
(Track star who has accepted a football scholarship to Penn State.)

30.Chris Swartz
6-4 200 PK Phoebus High School (Hampton)
(First-team All-Peninsula district, and first-team All-Area as a junior in 2003-04. According to 'The Newport News Daily Press', his coach, Bill Dee, says he's already the best field goal kicker in the state! 2nd-team All-Eastern Region as a junior.)

30.Horace Hubbard
6-4 229 DE Gretna High School (Is a little like ex-University of Virginia All-American Chris Slade. First team All-State in Group AA as an 11th-grader this year. A big-timer. Real name is "Dewayne." Only made second-team All-State in Group AA as picked by the VHSCA, the "Virginia High School Coaches Association," but don't let that fool you. He's for real. First-team All-Region III in basketball as a junior.)

31.Jason Fuller
6-6 240 TE-DE Kempsville High (Virginia Beach)(Has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. Also a good prep wrestler. 2nd-team All-Region and 2nd-team All-Tidewater as a junior defensive end in 2003-04.)

32.Bryan Webb
6-3 190 WR-S Salem High School (Salem)(First-team All-River Ridge District as a junior in 2003-04 as a safety. 2nd-team All-Region III. A big-time prospect. Recruiting analyst Max Emfinger rates him high).

33.Patrick Slebonick
6-4 290 OT North Stafford High School (UVa committment. His team made it to the regional semi-finals in his junior year in 2003-04. First-team All-Commonwealth District as a sophomore and as a junior.)

34.Zach Terrell
6-0 190 QB Manassas Park (Manassas)(1-A prospect. Made All-State Associated Press 1st-team All-Group A at defensive back as a junior. Bull Run District 'Player-Of-The-Year' as a junior in 2003-04.)

35.Daryl Green

6-3 235 LB Charlottesville High School (the latest in Division 1 prospects to come out of the city of Charlottesville. Made 2nd-team All-Jefferson District as a junior this year, despite playing on a 3-7 team. Honorable-Mention All-District as a sophomore.)

36.Bobby Rome
6-1 200 QB Granby High School (Norfolk)
(Fast. Started as a freshman. Saw him play in person as a freshman.
At the time I figured he'd be a Division 1-A prospect as a defensive back, but since then, according to the
"Virginian Pilot," he's become a sought-after QB as a JR this year.)

37.Joseph Johnson
6-3 370 DT Varina (first-team All-Capital District as an 11th-grader in 2003-04. Also made First-Team All-Metro, and 2nd-team All-State in Group AAA.)

38.Antonio Appleby
6-4 220 DE-TE Salem High School (Virginia Beach)(First-team All-Tidewater as a junior. Has committed to the University of Virginia.)

39.Sean Tyree
6-0 185 HB Lake Braddock High School (Fairfax)(Ran for 241 yards in his first game this year, and rushed for 1,274 this season as an 11th-grader. First-team All-Patriot District as a JR. Competes in 100-meters, 55-meters, and long jump in track.)

40.Jameal Deans
5-8 165 HB Woodrow Wilson High School (Portsmouth)(Listed some places, such as the Group AAA All-State team, which he made as a second-team member in 2003-04, as a junior, but is listed in at least one other source as a senior...Also stars in baseball and track. Despite size, was runner-up for Tidewater Player-Of-The-Year. First-team All-Tidewater at running back. Second-team All-Region at running back. Ran for 1,885 yards this year, including 306 yards on 17 carries in one game.)

41.Bosco Williams
6-3 200 WR Alleghany High School (Recruiters aren't nearly as impressed with him as I am, so I'm dropping him in my rankings. He missed his entire sophomore football year with a knee injury, and because his team has no one who can get him the ball. He healed back up in time for the end of Alleghany's basketball season last year. The next year, a junior, made first-team All-Region III in basketball. As a junior, was 2nd-team All-State in Group AA, and first-team All-Region III. Had 225 yards receiving in one game! The only question is his speed.)

42.Kyle Jolley
6-6 240 TE Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot High (Richmond)(team won state championship with a 10-1 record in his junior year, at the Division 1 level, which is composed of the state's smallest private schools. Made first-team All-State in VIS Division 1, the Virginia Independent Schools, at defensive end, and made 2nd-team All-State at tight end. Made first-team All-Virginia Commonwealth Conference at TE and DE as a junior in 2003-04. Has athleticism to play high school hoops. Does coming from a tiny school hurt his recruiting?)
