BASIC INFORMATION

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

It is the legal responsibility of a child’s parent/guardian to see that the following requirements are met for their children:

ATTENDANCE

Virginia Law states that “every child……must be in school every day that school is held”. The only legal excuses for absence are illness or a death in the family. If a child will be absent from school, the parent is to call the school as soon as possible and advise the office of the child’s absence for that day. The child is to bring a note from home when he/she returns to school explaining the absence. Cases of excessive absence will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office.

Absence because of family travel – We understand that families occasionally must travel, and their children must travel with them. However, absences because of travel must be kept to a minimum and are excusable only if the parents/student have made arrangements with the student’s teacher to make up the work beforehand. Five (5) school days prior to travel are an acceptable amount of time in which to complete schoolwork that will be missed. Students are also given one day for each day of absence to complete makeup work.

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION

It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to assure that their child/children arrive at school on time. The Spotsylvania County School District offers busing for students whose parent/guardian wishes to avail themselves of it. It should be noted that the bus service is a just that, a service. Children who misbehave on the bus can be denied use of the service. The policy regarding misbehavior on the bus is summarized as follows:

Teachers

Hazelwild Day School prides itself on having top quality teachers. However, the teachers need your help and input to do the best possible job of teaching your child. Please stay in touch with your child’s teacher.

Expect your child to have homework. Help your child with his/her homework. Helping your child shows that you care about his/her future, and he/she will do better in school if you are there to help.

Grades

Students in grades Kindergarten, 1 and 2 receive number grades (4, 3, 2, etc.)

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 receive actual letter grades (A, B, C, etc.)

Report cards are issued every 9 weeks.

LUNCH

Students have the option of bringing a cold lunch or buying a lunch at school. Milk is available for purchase in the lunchroom for 35 cents. Milk is included with lunch. Lunch and milk tickets can be purchased from the Nutrition Director in the lunchroom. Information regarding free or reduced lunch is available at the school. The minimum purchase allowed is a 5-day ticket – which can be used at any time.

Teachers take a ‘lunch count’ as soon as school begins. If your child is tardy, please call the office to advise them regarding your child’s lunch situation. Parents who do not call, and therefore do not include their child in the lunch count, will be expected to send a cold lunch to school with that child.

CONFLICT MANAGER PROGRAM

Hazelwild Day School has created a program in which selected students serve on the playground as Conflict Managers (CMs). The CMs move around the playground in teams of two helping other students resolve nonphysical conflicts. The CMs are not substitute teachers, and therefore do not ‘hand out’ consequences for undesirable behavior; nor do they become involved with students who have a physical altercation. They simply help students find solutions to immediate problems.

Please contact the School Counselor regarding the Conflict Manager Program.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY PROGRAM

(ASAP)

Hazelwild Day School provides supervised activities for enrolled students every day that school is held from the time of dismissal of school until 6:00 p.m. This program is available to enrolled students for a nominal fee. Please contact the school office for more information about enrolling your child in the program.
