Virginia Delegate
In the words of Shakespeare, "There comes a tide." With the retirement of Delegate Jim Dillard in the 41st District of the House of Delegates, we are presented with a great opportunity to continue his legacy of moving forward. This is an extremely important election in our District. We must continue our investment in education and our transportation needs if we are to prepare Virginia for the challenges of the 21st Century. My name is Dave Marsden, and I want to keep that progress going by advancing effective government in Virginia. Years ago, I began the only career I have ever wanted to have... working for the people of Fairfax County. I have lived in the 41st District for 28 years, and my wife Julia and I treasure the wonderful quality of life. My sons Nathan, Stuart and Connor graduated from Lake Braddock High School and went on to graduate from Virginia's colleges and universities. . I recognize that only through rolling up our sleeves and getting involved do we make things better for our children. I have served Fairfax County as the Superintendent of the Juvenile Detention Center, implementing a national award-winning education program and as the Chief Deputy and Acting Director of the Department of Juvenile Justice for the State of Virginia. Through these positions, I worked closely with Governor Mark Warner to successfully improve our State government. Among other successes, together, we saved a valuable youth treatment facility from closure. When elected, I will be the only member of the House of Delegates who has run a State agency. In my 17 years running the Juvenile Detention Center, there were no escapes or serious injuries to the detainees. This is an unmatched record that many talented county employees helped me achieve. You may also recognize me from work I've done in our community. As a member of the Literacy Council, the Partnership on Youth, as President of the Virginia Juvenile Justice Association , and President of the West*Lynch Charitable Foundation, I have enjoyed making a difference in our community. I also enjoyed working with children and coached our youth in soccer, basketball, and football in the Braddock Road Youth Club for many years. Additionally, I officiated high school and youth recreation league basketball for many years. I was proud to win the annual Cardinal Basketball Association Commissioners Award for outstanding reliability. I was always there for the kids and I will be there for you as your delegate. This race is about the direction Virginia will take. By working together to invest and plan for the future, we will maintain our quality of life and raise our children in hope and safety. These are the values by which we must govern. Throughout my life, I've embodied these values, and I will put them to work for the 41st District. When the Brady Bill was in doubt in Virginia, I worked with a State Senator to ensure passage of this vital public safety measure. When the Enterprise School for troubled youths in Fairfax County needed a new home, I organized volunteers to renovate an old building, and raised the $30,000 in construction services necessary to get the project completed. When the "one gun a month" bill was under attack in the legislature, I testified before the House Courts of Justice Committee as to what the irresponsible proliferation of handguns looked like from the perspective of someone on the front lines. When the Department of Juvenile Justice was faced with the recent de-certification of it's largest juvenile correctional facility in 2001, I got to work as soon as I was appointed and within one year it was re-certified and a much safer facility for youths and correctional officers. But there is more work to be done! There are groups that want to divide our strong community with social issues, govern with three-word slogans, and take pledges that erode their ability to make decisions on what's best for Virginia. We know the values that make Virginia a special place to live and we must continue the fight for investment in education, Virginia's transportation infrastructure, and strengthening our public safety by giving our first responders the resources they need to protect our community. The reason I will win is that I will not be outworked, I have been on the front lines, I have the experience, and I have a history of getting things done. Since they know my record and commitment to Fairfax and Virginia. I am very proud to have gotten an early endorsement from: • Gerry Connolly, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, • Sharon Bulova, Braddock District Supervisor • Stan Barry, Sheriff of Fairfax County • Kate Hanley, former Chairman of the Board of Supervisors This race will be about maintaining the fiscal responsibility and progress that will be the legacy of Governor Mark Warner's administration. Investing in the future for education and transportation will keep our businesses vibrant and our quality of life the best in the nation. Please help me in this effort! Please explore this website as we will be adding information regularly on issues, upcoming events and general news and updates related to the campaign. Thank you, Dave
