What Is JROTC?

What is JROTC; that is the question. JROTC is a great program, which is designed for motivated and ambitious young adults. Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth, Kansas was where the first JROTC program was first started. The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to become better citizens. Within this program, the cadets learn what it takes to be a leader. This program also teaches First-Aid and map reading along with American History, many challenges of physical training, drill and ceremonies and the option to co-curricular activities.

First-Aid has always been a huge piece of the program with all the activities that we do. All cadets get CPR certified. This way all cadets will know what to do in case of an emergency. Map reading is fun but can be a little rough. We learn to read and eight-digit grid map then get to go out and explore the outdoors. Some “play” traps come along in which we have to use First-Aid. With the map reading, we also learn to use a compass correctly, survival skill, how to take charge of you battalion as a leader as well as sticking together as a battalion should. As everyone knows the U.S. has a long past. In JROTC, we learn all about American History and Citizenship. Every Friday every cadet has to present a Current Event in front of his or her class. This enables the cadet to get involved in the World around him or her.

Physical Training may be rough but it helps us stay in shape and raises our self-confidence. We call it PT or Cadet Challenge because it really can be a challenge. This activity consists of sit and reach, pull-ups, sit-ups, shuttle run and one-mile run. Drill and Ceremony helps us learn more about responsibility, manners and respect. We drill by marching in place, moving or jogging in place.

In the JROTC program we have quite a few co-curricular activities. This includes: Drill Team, Rifle Team, Raider Challenge Team, and some get to practice for Color Guard. Everyone on Drill Team learns how to march, stay in step, and depend on others, with respect for others and self-respect. Everyone on Rifle Team learn how to properly use a dangerous weapon. Major responsibility is needed and well earned in this activity. The cadets learn how to correctly and safely site and shoot the weapon and rifle safety. Many go to JROTC competitions and compete for ribbons, trophies and points. Raider Challenge Team is just as it sounds. The entire team learns more First-Aid, map reading, orienteering as well as survival skills and fun stuff like the Rope Bridge yet; it is basic physical fitness. These cadets are always in shape, who learn great leadership, help each other boast morale and confidence in them selves.

The cadets, with the guidance and supervision of two adults run all of this. A cadet teaches a former cadet who could possibly take their place in time to come. That is what makes JROTC a young person teaching another young person. JROTC is a great course based on responsibility, motivation, and a whole of teamwork. All cadets get involved with school, the community as well as the rest of the world around them. Most people think that JROTC is a Military based course, with all the physical training and the uniforms is our responsibility. JROTC is not for recruiting people into the military; it is to help young people be better citizens and it works. Now you know that the cadets of JROTC do go that extra mile, for the community as well as themselves.
