An Athlete's View of Morehouse Track & Field

Track & Field Athletes at Morehouse College are not respected by the administration or the student body. Of course, there are individuals throughout the Morehouse campus who do support and respect the track team. However, those who do not recognize the greatness of the team outnumber those who do recognize and respect the accomplishments of the team. The lack of respect can also be seen from the Spelman women. I cannot blame them for not recognizing the accomplishments of the team. They are not publicized by Morehouse. If football and basketball players are heralded in the ways that they are on this campus, one can only expect the women to flock to them (even though neither is as successful as the track team or has a brighter future than those elite individuals on the track team). This page here is dedicated to giving some exposure to the Morehouse Track & Field squad.

I cannot distinguish the reasons why sports like football and basketball obtain a larger fanbase than track and field. Track and field events have excitement. The same amount of skin is shown, maybe more. Yet, the football and basketball teams have more female "groupies" and receive more funding than track and field, it seems. What does a track & field athlete have to do in order to get some respect around this campus?? I have no idea as to what else I must accomplish. Trust me, I have tried to do everything in my power, including better performances. A few of my collegiate highlights are on the another site. Click the link: "Cam's Track Page" to see them.

Allow me to break down some of the reasons why the Morehouse track team should get some respect and recognition. First, the track team is the second-most successful team at Morehouse and the most successful out of the three that are being discussed in this article. Moreover, the track team is the only team at the college to produce national champions and all-Americans regularly. In fact, the team had a national champion in the high jump and an all-American in the triple jump in mid-March. However, neither of these two individuals have been recognized by the critically-acclaimed newspaper of Morehouse, the Maroon Tiger. It seems that the newspaper is more interested in recognizing a high school basketball player who was not even interested in attending the college. Or they write articles about the losses of the football and basketball teams. Why not write about the positives at the institution? Why do they choose to focus on the negatives? I realize that we are not as politically-inclined as some of the other teams that have previously been mentioned. But that should not matter on the larger scale.

Well, those are my personal feelings on the subject. Sorry, I just had to vent. It's a classic case of the "crabs in a barrel" theory that is portrayed by Black Americans on a daily basis. People cannot allow one Black individual to rise. They must pull him down. Don't Forget!

Thank you??!
