Baycliff's Portuguese Water Dogs ~About our Puppies ~ Baycliff puppies are evaluated at eight weeks of age for structure and temperament. Puppies who are chosen for "show competition" possess exceptional body structure, coat, and temperament, and are considered closest, within the litter, to the PWD Breed Standard. Litters generally produce one or two exceptional puppies.
~ Litters in 2003 ~ See litters here, and at NAVIO Portuguese Water Dogs, our sister-kennel, owned by Patricia Cazenave. Pictures and pedigrees of the proud parents, as well as the puppies, will be posted. ~ Acquiring a Baycliff PWD ~ Puppies who are not chosen for "show" are temperament tested to determine the best personality match for families who desire a Baycliff puppy, based on their Application for Companion Dog. We place our puppies in homes that will provide the love, time, and care necessary for the breed. We are very serious about our Breeding Program. We breed to perpetuate only the very best qualities in our dogs; all puppies are sold on Spay/Neuter Contracts, to approved homes. Our puppies are examined by our veterinarian before going to their new homes and we provide shot records. We require that puppies are vet checked again, within three business days after going to their new homes. We strongly recommend Obedience Training, which can begin as soon as your puppy has had complete immunizations. Obedience training is a wonderful way to bond with your puppy, and an obedient, well trained dog is happier and more enjoyable. We consult with our animal behaviorist, Tracy Hilliard, owner of FLASHEPOINT MALINOIS, and we provide on-going support to foster our puppies' development and appropriate training. We enjoy wonderful relationships with our "puppy people". Having been bred for centuries, to live and work with people, PWDs are intelligent, active, and people-oriented. They are not, however, the best breed-choice for everyone; the decision to obtain one should not be taken lightly. While the intelligence and stamina of this dog serve the PWD well as a Working Dog, it is challenging for some people. The PWD requires regular grooming; a short coat requires less brushing. Daily exercise is required to keep the PWD healthy and happy. Jo Ann Shepherd
