FAQ's

1. What is the TWSL?

TWSL is a recreational adult women's league with players ages 18 and up. The level of experience varies from those who are just beginning to those who have had some high school and/or college experience. We welcome beginners or those who would like to get back into it after a few years off.

2. What is the average age of the players in the TWSL?

The average age is 35. The median age is 36. Players range from early twenties to mid-sixties. The league has an Open Division for all ages that start at 18 and an Over 35 division for those 35 and above.

3. How many seasons do you play?

We play a fall season that runs roughly from Labor Day until Thanksgiving; an indoor season that runs roughly from mid-January to early March; a spring season that runs from mid-March to early June; and a summer season that runs from late June to mid August.

4. When and where do you play?

Games for the Open Division in the Fall and Spring outdoor seasons are played on Saturday afternoons, games in the summer are on Monday evenings. The Over 35 Division in the Fall, Spring and Summer outdoor season are played on Friday nights. All outdoor games are at the TCC Portsmouth Campus, confusingly located in Suffolk. We are always looking for a location to play indoor. In the past we have played at Nansemond Suffolk Academy and Grassfield Elementary.

5. How many people are on the field and how long are the halves?

The outdoor seasons are 7 v 7 and games are on a U-10 or U-12 field. Indoor games are 5 v 5, no walls, in whatever gym will take us. Halves are 35 minutes for outdoor games and 25 minutes for indoor games.

6. Are there practices?

The league does sponsor league-wide practices for those who would like to come out and play a little during the week, usually Wednesday evenings. These are by no means mandatory and usually consist of a scrimmage.

7. How do you make teams?

We have two divisions, Open (all ages above 18) and Over 35.

The Open Division can have what we call a Team Core (if entered) which consists of 5 players including a TR (team representative), then we add players to the teams. We try to make them fair and spread out the talent and experience amongst the teams for even games. Or teams will be made of a TR and players that sign up for the season. These teams will remain together for the Fall and Spring season.

The Over 35 Division will have a TR and teams will be made up as even as possible. These teams are reshuffled in the Fall and Springs seasons.

We try to get at least one goalkeeper on each team and an even number of those who would like to play offense and defense. We depend on honest answers to the questions on the registration form to make the teams as even as possible.

8. My kid's play rec soccer, will I be able to watch them and play too?

Many of us that play either have kids or coach, so we are always trying to schedule our games around the kid's rec schedule. We play on Saturday afternoons and usually the kid's rec teams play on Saturday mornings. If your child plays advanced, there may be some conflicts.

9. Can I make requests to play on the same team as another player?

Yes, we do allow requests, but because we try to make the teams as even as possible we only allow one reciprocating request for each player. Meaning if you request someone, they must in turn request you.

10. How much does it cost?

The cost per season ranges from $35-$65 depending on which division a player participates in and the league's overhead costs for that season. This fee covers insurance, ref fees, player pass costs, field usage and maintenance costs, end of season prizes, team shirts, and other necessary operating expenses.
