Areas of Specialization

The program offered by the School of Library and Information Science is structured around a foundation of four core courses, a choice of several generally applicable courses that serve the student regardless of concentration, and many upper-level courses in more highly specialized areas. While students in the school do not formally declare majors, they may choose to concentrate their studies in one of ten areas:

Archives and Records Management
Biomedical Information
Book Arts
Information Resources Management
Information Systems
Law Librarianship
Library and Information Service
Music Librarianship
Services for Children and Young Adults
Special Collections

The school also offers a specialization in School Library Media Services that leads the student to certification as a school library media specialist.

The School of Library and Information Science requires that students complete a core of four courses (Information Systems in Libraries and Information Centers, Information Sources and Services, Libraries and Information in Society, and Organization of Information), plus eight elective courses tailored to the student's individual educational and professional goals. Faculty advising assists each student in designing an appropriate personal plan of study.
