History

The School of Library and Information Science was founded at The Catholic University of America in 1939 as the Department of Library Science in the School of Arts and Sciences. The school has been accredited continuously by the American Library Association (ALA) since 1948. The school library media program of study is accredited by both the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC). In 1974, in recognition of its increasing importance of libraries in information services, information science was incorporated into the name of the department. On January 1, 1981, the university elevated the department to school status. During 2001 The School of Library and Information Science celebrated reaching the 20 year milestone as a school within the University.

Students who came to the School during the fall 1999 semester and students who expect to start during the spring 2000 semester were encouraged to attend an orientation for new students on Fri., January 7.
