31.  Henry Clark was born about 1806 in Patrick Co. VA..  He died about 1882 in Mercer Co. WV.  He was buried.  We have not been able to find when Henry died.  Bob DID fine the graves of Henry and Ruth in their family cemetery in Camp Creek.  It is called the Clark Cemetery.  They have home made markers and are side by side.  Henry lived with John until he died sometime after 1880.  John is also buried there.

  Henry and Ruth ran the Clark's Inn at Camp Creek in the 1800's. Henry seems to have been a man who was always ready to make a dime, and was quiet good at it.

  There was a famous Civil War battle fought at the home of Henry and Ruth and is written in books that can be found in the local Library's.  Ruth refused to leave her home when the North came and took over her house.  She stayed inside with some of her small children and the Northern Troops.  The next morning a battle was fought between Cox's Army and the Flat Top Copperheads, captained by the famous Richard Foley.

  One can only guess at what Ruth had to say to the Union Troop's. She had to be a very brave lady to stay and face the Union Troop's without Henry there to back her up.  I am sure that they were more than happy to depart her home the next morning, and the fight with Richard Foley and his Copperheads had to be mild to what she had put them through. She is a lady to be admired by all of her descendants, men and women. She is  also a good example for our young girls today.  I can't help but wonder how many of us would be as brave ?  I have also wondered where Henry was that Ruth was in the home alone except for her small children ?  Could he have gone into the nearby mountains to warn Capt. Richard Foley ?  It is very likely that he did and was unable to get back, or he could have fought with the Copperheads. When the State of West Virginia tore down and burned the Clark home to make a new road, Josiah Carl Clark says there were balls still in bedded it the logs from the battle fought there in 1862.  It would have been nice if the State could or Would have saved the home as an Historical building. Maybe too, I only wish for this because they were my great great grandparents.

  Henry and Ruth came to this area in 1842 according to their son, Henry, Jr.  They first bought property in Wyoming Co. Virginia, then sometime before 1860 they sold that to a William Clark ( don't know what relation, but am sure there is one) and bought the property in Camp Creek where they lived out their lives.  Henry gave the property to their son John and lived there with him until he died sometime before 1890.

He was married to Ruth Mize (daughter of John Mize and Frances "Frankie" Ingram ) 17 Mar 1825 on Thursday in Patrick Co. VA..  Ruth Mize was born 9 Feb 1808 on Tuesday in Franklin Co. Va..  She died 9 Oct 1878 on Wednesday in Mercer Co. WV.  Henry Clark and Ruth Mize had the following children:

Va..  In the 1870 census Elizabeth says she had eleven children with seven living.  We have listed the seven living, but couldn't find the other children.  They are probably buried in the John R. Shrewsbury cemetery in unmarked graves.

  Elizabeth is buried in this cemetery beside her second husband who was called Fayette Shrewsbury.  They are buried behind her first son, James Henry Cunningham.  Their daughter Martha is buried beside Elizabeth with one unmarked grave between them.  This could have been one of the children we couldn't find.

  Sarah Jane never wanted any of her girls to marry, or maybe it was just the men they chose she didn't like.  When each of them decided to marry, she told them they would live on "bread and water" if they married.   I know she told my grandmother that George Meadows was too spoiled by his parents, and would never take care of her.  We can assume she was a very protective mother to her girls.  I think she was wrong about my grandfather George, for I was never in their home that they didn't have plenty to eat.

  Then too, it could be that she thought that the men were marrying her girls for the property she had given them, but I don't think this happened to any on them.

  Sarah Jane was very healthy till shortly before she died of cancer. In her late sixty's she could kick higher than her head.  She walked from her home to Bluefield, which was a good twenty five to thirty miles, and if she missed the train back, she walked back home stopping in Kegley, WVa. to visit William Riley King and his children to rest.

  Sarah Jane carried her corn cob pipe and tobacco in a little pouch she wore around her waist.  She also carried water with her. Can't you just see Sarah Jane stopping to rest on a cool green grassy spot beside the tracks ( she most often walked the railroad tracks ) to rest, taking out her corn cob pipe, filling it with tobacco and having her a smoke and a cool drink while she rested, then moving on toward home ?  She was a remarkable lady.

  Sarah never looked at another man after James Henry Cunningham died.  I guess she figured she had found the best and there was no point in looking for another, and she wouldn't settle for less than what he was.  Theirs was a true, if sad love story.

  Sarah Jane would walk to Motcalm, W.Va. to go to Church which is about fifteen miles one way.  I guess this is one reason she lived so long.

  She also taught her granddaughter, Mable,  to count before she started to school.  Mable could count to one hundred before she went to school.  I am sure Sarah Jane also had her to read by then.  James Henry Cunningham and Sarah Jane Wimmer had the following children:

WVa..    Virgie Cunningham was a very sweet and kind person.  I remember her as always being very passive and never speaking back, and I never heard her argue with anyone.  She was a hard worker all her life, taking care of her children and a lot of her grandchildren.  It is easy to see why George Meadows fell in love with her when you see the picture of her as a young girl, and it is also easy to see why she fell in love with him.

  One thing I would have wished for them would have been to have more time for themselves as they grew older.

She was married to George W. Meadows (son of William Thomas Meadows  and Martha Ellen Rinehart) May 17, 1899 on Friday in Mercer Co. WV...  George W. Meadows died April 17, 1960 on Sunday in Mercer Co. WV...  He was buried Cunningham Cemetery in Bluff Mountain, Mercer Co. West Virginia.  He was born Feb. 3, 1881 on Thursday in Wyoming, Co. Va..    George and Virgie Lee are buried in the Cunningham/Shrewsbury/Meadows cemetery on Bluff Mountain above Dott, WV.  Bob had been keeping the cemetery cut until Wanda Meadows Voult told me she didn't want a weed eater used in it.  With all the stumps in this cemetery it is impossible to use a lawn mower in spots.  Now it gets cleaned once a year just before Memorial Day.

  I remember my grandfather as being a very hard worker.  He not only had his family to care for, but his grandchildren and some great grandchildren.  He also took care of my mother after my father was killed.  He saw to it that her garden was always plowed and ready to plant and often helped her plant it.  He had our coal and wood before we needed it for the winters.  All my mother had to do was ask, and he would do for her, but rarely did she have to ask him.  He was this way with all his children.  He had a crippled hand from a saw mill accident, but he never let this stop him from helping anyone in need. I look at the pictures of my grandparents and their children and It is easy to see that they were well provided for by  the way they dressed. He was a kindhearted man and an excellent man to know.

  George wasn't a man to let anyone take anything from him if he thought he  was in the  right.  There was a time he lived on this farm, and Henderson Shrewsbury said the house was on his property about a foot, and planned to take it from him.  My grandfather got a bunch of men together and during the night they moved everything out of the house, jacked it up and moved it down over a hill so there would be no doubt it was on his property.  Curtis Mayford Shrewsbury says he was a young boy at this time and remembers helping to carry the things out of the house.  He also remembers that George was so mad that he even dug up the fruit trees he had planted and took them to George Washington Shrewsbury Jr's  farm and replanted them.  This was all done in one night.  The next day Henderson came by to give George an eviction notice, and found the house moved.  I can remember that my mother spoke of Henderson as "Old Hen".  In fact. I didn't know what his name was until I started doing the research, for this was what all the family from all sides called him.  Henderson was a first cousin to Virgie Lee Cunningham.

  My grandfather was one of the best hunters in the mountain, so I hear.  There was one last deer left in the mountains, and George and Willis Monk decided they were going to  get it.  They built a blind for Willis to sit in while George took a cow bell and chased the deer toward him.  As he moved closer Willis could hear his cow bell and getting himself prepared, Willis shot the deer.  Arlie Monk tells us that was the last deer in the mountain, and that it took about twenty years, before they gradually started coming back.  No deer were seen until around 1930 to 1935.  I'm sure the Monk and Meadows families enjoyed every bite of that deer.

  George loved to fox hunt, and was noted as one of the best at this too.  He was also a good tracker.  In fact, I think my grandfather was one of the best "mountain men" of his time.    He also had a kind heart.  During the flu epidemic in 1918, one of my grandmother's cousins was sick.  Two children in this family ( Henderson Shrewsbury's family) had already died and George said he wouldn't let them loose the third one.  He sat up with the young daughter for several nights bathing her to keep her temperature down and saved her life.

  George wasn't a fancy man and never got above his raising.  He remained an humble and caring man till the day he died.  Virgie Lee Cunningham and George W. Meadows had the following children:

Macie L. Shrewsbury (daughter of William Henderson Shrewsbury and Arminta Elizabeth Shrewsbury ) was born in 1910 in Mercer Co. WVa..  Without the knowledge Macie had of who was buried in the Wimmer Cemetery we restored in 1997, we would not have known where so many people were buried there.  We certainly do thank her for having such a good memory and sharing it with us to help make the Cemetery as complete as possible.

  Macie also shared several stories with me about my Dad ( Andy Nelson Sigmon ), which are in short supply for me.  She attended a Party on the mountain as a young girl and my father was also at the Party.  I am going to guess it was around the year of 1924/25.  Someone blew out the lights ( the only lights at that time were oil lamps) and one of the girls ask. " What was Moses doing when the lights went out" ?  My Dad replied, " Standing in the corner with his shirt tail out".  The girls got together and told Maudie Shrewsbury to go over and ask my Dad what Moses said when the lights went out, she did, and he gave her the same answer.  Maudie came back very upset that they had set her up for this insult.  The girls were shocked that my father would say something so shocking to and in front of a bunch of girls.  One will find it hard to believe that something so naive could be insulting to girls considering that today, nothing seems to be insulting.

  Another cute story from Macie:  She went to a Party, again on the mountain, and a Mrs. Shrewsbury had baked a "Guess Cake".  A Guess Cake was one baked with a secret something inside and the young people would pay a dime and get to guess what was baked inside the cake.  The one to guess right, won the cake.  Everyone had spent all their dimes, so the lady told them to just guess.  Basel Shrewsbury knew what his mother had baked the cake and as he was "Sweet" on Macie, he slipped up to her and said,     " Guess Allum".  She did, and won the cake. "Big Fred' Shrewsbury was at the party and said," Someone told her". I can still hear Macie laughing when she tells me this story.  We really thank her for sharing her memories with us, and making them partly ours.  Lowel V. Meadows and Macie L. West Virginia.    As a young child and older, I can remember my Mother was always telling me about our family.  I can remember her taking me to the "Mountain" where all our families were buried and showing me who was buried where.  Once, when I was seven, she took me to the George Washington Shrewsbury  Cemetery and showed me where my great grandparents were buried. At the time all I wanted to do was play with all the other children. I often wish now that I had listened to more of what she had told me, but was surprised when we started our research at how much came back to me.  So, she got more into my head than I thought.  I am grateful I had a mother who was interested, but I could have known so much more if I hadn't been too busy to listen to her. She would be very proud on this book.

  Mother is buried in the Roselawn Cemetery on the Bluefield Princeton road.

She was married to Andy Nelson Sigmon (son of John William Sigmon  and Sarah "Sadi" Elizabeth Pritchard) 29 Mar 1928 on Thursday in Bristol, Va..  Andy Nelson Sigmon was buried Cunningham Cemetery in Bluff Mountain, Mercer Co. West Virginia.  He died Feb.1, 1942 on Sunday in Princeton, Mercer Co. WV..  He was born June12, 1907 on Wednesday in Dott, WV..    I have spoken to a lot of people who remember my Dad, and no one has ever had an unkind word to say about him.  He was one of those rare people who was always ready to do anything to help others in a time of need.  He was a coal miner and was killed while walking to Matoaka to get a cab for Springton, VA. where we lived.  He was working in Kingston, VA.   He is buried in the Cunningham Cemetery on Bluff Mountain at Dott, VA.

  He was a wonderful Son, brother, husband , friend and father.  When my Uncle Lowel Meadows was sick and it came to my father's attention, he walked from Springton, VA. to the mountain to check on him, and finding him in critical condition, my father walked off the mountain and got a cab to take him back to get Lowel.  Lowel lived so far in the mountain that the cab couldn't get in to him, so my father carried Lowel about two miles to the road and laid him in the back seat.  He took him to our home and called the Doctor.  The Doctor told my parents that if he could have gotten to Lowel two to three days sooner, he could have saved his life, but he died the next morning.  I have to wonder why my father wasn't told sooner.

  The few memories I have of my dad I wouldn't trade for any amount of money.
