Living on Pern

Guide to M*ing

** Angelfire have informed me that it's been almost a year since I last updated and suggested I may want to do so if I don't want my page deemed inactive and removed.   Serendipitously, Anne McCaffrey has now announced that she is relaxing her rules on Pern fandom in general.  Check out http://annemccaffrey.org/fan-fiction-rules.html
for the official word and http://forum.annemccaffrey.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20556 for some clarification. **

After spending some years now roleplaying on PernMOOs and even longer as a fan of Pern, I've compiled this page of problems, rules and FAQs that I and other players have come across. Originally part of an RP guide, I think it's probably of greater worth as a Pern resource.

If you've no idea what MOOs and MUSHes (etc) are and would like to know more, can I recommend that you visit The Mud Connector and/or the M*ing Guide section of this site. If you've no idea what Pern is, then read the books by Anne McCaffrey (the generally recommended starting point is Dragonflight), or visit Anne McCaffrey's own page or this very good fan site, Sariel's Guide to Pern . For those of you who have a working knowledge of the books and who either RP or are just curious about the Pern side, read on.

My habitual disclaimer is that a good deal of this is just my own interpretation, although I've tried to put the general consensus or McCaffrey verdict where possible. If you disagree with me, please feel free to let me know.  NB: The following pages may contain spoilers for the books, so only visit them if you've either read them all or do not mind finding out the odd plot development.

Links  More Pern-related links that are of use to those people who like to know Pern in that much depth.

The Non-negotiable Rules  The author of the Pern books, Anne McCaffrey, has laid down a few rules which apply to all PernM*s. I've listed them in as much detail as I know here. ** this page is no longer applicable; however all current Pern games are likely to continue following them for the immediate future, so I have left it up for now. **
What's on Pern  It comes up a lot in RP, what Pern does and does not have. Here's a few of the topics I've seen raised with the opinions and (where possible) the consensus on them.
A Pernese Perspective  A run-down on some of the attitudes your typical Pernese might have. This is a brief guide for those of you who don't have access to the books or are just uncertain of how to get into Pern. Also looks into some of the issues of canon raised in RP.
Fire lizards  Playing with fire lizards, and how and how not to acquire one.

Credits go to various pages on the web, the mailing-lists on Harper's Tale, and also the people on The Kitchen Table bulletin board. And, of course, Anne herself.
