CHAMPIONS POOL
Mytol looked around him still in a daze, he was surrounded by every type of magical scum imaginable, how could this be? It came back to him like a slap in the face, Shandalar had sent him here after he had tried to procure his cloak. How could I be so careless as to allow myself to be teleported to this most vile of places. All that Mytol could see was wasteland, littered with the odd rock or dried up shrub. The only landmark seemed to be an odd looking pool to his left that was strangely enough sitting in isolation not one man or beast within miles of it. The mage thought this curious and immediately went to examine it more closely.
Upon closer inspection the pool seemed to be so clear and pure it in fact radiated its own light rather than reflecting it. Mytol touched the water and was sent catapulting through the air as if launched by an ogre. Mytol than attempted to identify the pool using magic with no success. He attempted a few minor offensive spells which all seemed to reflect harmlessly of the liquid without even stirring the surface. As a last resort he attempted to cast a dimension door to return to his tower but was amazed to see his door appear in the center of the pool. Mytol cautiously tried to enter the door only to be sent cart wheeling backwards yet again. In desperation he cast another door with the same result.
Mytol sat staring into the portal, his tower was a mere footstep away, yet he could not enter, his only chance he realized rested with his apprentice Devotion a talented if not unreliable mage who had served under Mytol for several years since he rescued her from a life of thieving from a port town near Waterdeep. Devotion arrived after what seemed like days to Mytol but his own logic told him it could only have been hours, it seemed this pool as an unnerving affect on you if you remain in close proximity.
Devotion was startled by the portal door but was soon relieved when she saw her teacher sitting on a rock inside of it.. What is wrong teacher do you wish me to join you? No! I wish you to take one of the tomes from my library and go to Candlekeep and find out what you can about a mystical pool of silver that exists only in the never world, it has several magical immunities and seems to affect the very fabric of time. This should be enough information. Now go and return within the day, there are some Dimension door scrolls on my desk take them and leave GO! But teacher GO! now. With this Devotion left the tower to complete her task.
Devotion returned with a look of despair on her face, Mytol noticed immediately and bellowed out you have better found the information I require or I will torch you until the wind blows you away! Oh I have sir but you will not like what I have to relate to you. Let me decide that child. So Devotion related to the mage how he was stuck in the city of despair and that the pool was known as the pool of champions, a mystic pool that allows only champions pass through it so they can slay the evil creatures that reside there. It was used in past centuries by past paladins to hone their skills but was thought to have been abandon when it was realized that those of evil hearts could also pass through as long as they were a champion at what they did. Thus allowing powerful enemies to lay in wait for paladins and slay them before they had a chance to defend themselves. It was also known to enchant the weapon of everyone who passed through the portal and thus was a much sort after destination. There is scant more information teacher that I have to convey I just hope it is more useful to you as it was for me.
Oh child it is, Not only will I leave this place but I will be stronger for the trouble. Devotion you will organize a tourney inviting the best warriors from the sword coast whether they be mage or paladin or thief, whether they be good or evil, the prize will be a nymph to ensure all will participate the good will to rescue her the evil and neutral will compete for the wealth. So hurry child and return to me with a list of the competitors.
