This is a guide on how to access your folders from home. To do this, you will be using an FTP program. There are many FTP programs to use, by in my opinion, CuteFTP is the best. Here is how to use it:
1.) Go to http://www.cuteftp.com/download/index.shtml - The Download site of an FTP Program . Select CuteFTP 4.2 for if you have a PC and run Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000.
2.) Next, scroll down a little and type in your e-mail address where it says to. Next, hit download. It doesn’t matter what download site you choose, only try to use another one if the pre-selected one goes very slow.
3.) After you have downloaded the program, double-click it to install. The installation process is easy and self-explanatory.
4.) After you install it, find the program in the directory you specified, then double click it. A window will pop up. Click on "continue Evaluation Period" or something to that sort. Then, another window will pop up. It should look like this: http://www.cuteftp.com/images/sm.gif . Click “New”. On the left side of the window, lots of blank fields will show up. In the “Label for Site” field, put any name you want; I simply use “School”. Under “FTP Host Address”, put ftp.stcva.org. Next, under “FTP Site Username”, type in your user name, then in “FTP Site Password”, your password. Your user name and password is the same thing you use at school to log onto the computers. The next option will be “FTP Site Connection Port”, and this is already set for you; It should say 21. The Login Type should be, “Normal”. After this info is all filled in, hit connect.
5.) After you hit connect, you should get a screen that looks like this: http://www.cuteftp.com/images/fullscreen.gif . The screen to the left is the folder on your hard drive where you want to upload/download from/to. You can browse to a folder where everything will be saved. To the left, you will see a list of folders. Double click on MS Students, then find your folder. After you get into that, you can download and upload things to it. Downloading is taking things from your folder, and putting them onto your computer at home. Uploading is taking things from your computer at home, and putting them into your school folder. To download, all you need to do is click and drag the file to the right side of the screen, into the folder that you want to save it. Or, you can right click on the file, and hit Download. To upload, you can right click on something to the left, and click upload.
6.) Here is an example of when this could be helpful. If you have an English paper due, then you can access your folder from home to work on it. After you have downloaded it and made changes, you can save it. Then, upload that same file back to your folder. A screen will pop up saying that there is another file with the same name there, but just click “Overwrite”, and it will save the newer version.
I hope this explains everything on how to use an FTP program. If you still have any questions, just ask, or e-mail brianm87@mediaone.net which is me, Brian McDaniel , or CuevasH@stcva.org, which is Mr. Cuevas.
