International Projects
POSTCARD GEOGRAPHY I responded to a call for participation by Loni Donlan. The project is repeated several times during the course of the school year which is nice for schools using 4 X 4 block scheduling. The following is the registration site for this project: POSTCARD GEOGRAPHY.

My business students used this project as a desktop publishing project but many classes had purchased postcards or actually got donations from local businesses. Using a digital camera, photographs were taken of places of interest in our city and surrounding areas. These pictures were then used to create our own picture postcards to exchange around the world. The Internet was used for project registration and acquisition of mailing addresses for all other participants.

My students used the computer to create mailing labels for each participating school. A database was maintained recording when we had sent a card to a school and when we had received one back. A wall map was also used so that students could mark each state or country as we received our mail. The postcards were displayed in the classroom for others to see. At the end of the project, the postcards were placed in a scrapbook for future reference.

***Warning that the postage can make this project very expensive***
***Updated format now allows for sending Electronic Cards which can save on postage!***
Electronic Postcards Around The World Another variation of the Postcard Geography project was conducted by Mrs Gray and her class this year. It was called Electronic Postcards. By using e-mail and attachments, classes around the world shared information and pictures of their locales.  You may view the collection of "postcards" at Mrs Gray's Classroom
ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTERS This project was started by a teacher in France who wanted to join together with classes world wide to have classes produce a month electronic newsletter on various topics. Topics include things like student's hobbies, after-school activities, a typical day at school, holidays and celebrations and class selected topics. We were grouped with about 10 other schools with whom we exchanged our newsletters each month from October through May. This project allowed my students to do original writing, use e-mail as well as learn about cultures in other parts of the world.

This is a project that could be coordinated by any classroom teacher by placing a call for participation on any listserv. If you wish to have international participation, I recommend using the St. Olaf site at ST. OLAF IECC

NEWSDAY Global School Net's NEWSDAY project is also excellent and is started new with each school semester so again it would be good for schools on 4 X 4 block scheduling.  I have used NEWSDAY as a collaberative project between my business students and a journalism class on the high school level.
