USA Collaboration

USA QUILT PROJECT This year-long project has been coordinated by Kay Ellison, a library/media specialist in Vancouver, WA. You may view the facts about the project at the USA Quilt Project Facts page.
This project involved creating quilt squares which integrated art into my business class. We also shared postcards which my students created using desktop publishing skills. They used word processing software to create three sets of mailing labels. Two sets were used for the snail-mail for the postcards and the quilt squares. The last set was sent to the Virginia Department of Tourism so that information about the state could be mailed to the participating classes.
E-mail was used
  • to introduce the 50 participating classes
  • to share local traditions
  • to share recipes which used local products
A wall map was used to keep track of what had been received from each participating class. My class took the project a step further by combining the recipes into a cookbook. Students used the Internet to research interesting facts about each state. Within the cookbook, there is a reference page about the state followed by the recipes that we received. The books were published by the students and shared with any of the participating classes who wished to receive one. Each student received a copy of the cookbook as well.
The cookbook was shared with our Culinary Arts teacher. His class prepared the different foods for our classes to end the project with a USA Food Fest.
POSTCARD GEOGRAPHY Using a Listserv, you could request that classes around the United States share picture postcards of their locale or electronic postcards sent as e-mail.
Excellent project to extend USA geography skills.
USA COOKIE BOOK There have been several very successful projects involving sharing recipes from around the country by way of e-mail. You can create your own project by sending your request to a Listserv.
Ideas previously used include sharing
  • Cookie Recipes
  • Favorite Snacks
  • Chocolate Recipes
  • Granny's Recipes
This makes for an excellent project to map where the e-mails are from as well as get a taste of food from the many different cultures of our nation and create a cookbook as a final product.
