Each student in this class will choose a service or retail business that they would like to own and operate. All of the following activities will deal with this business. The teacher reserves the right to deny permission for the use of any proposed business which is deemed educational inappropriate. Unless specific software is denoted, all activities should be completed using PageMaker 6.5.

 

Assignment

Description/Requirements

 

Business Description

Type one or two paragraphs as needed to describe your proposed business. Give specifics in regards to the goods or services that your company will provide.

 

Business Name

Without using the name of an actual business, decide on the name to be used for your company. This name does not have to have any form of your name in the title.

 

Business Logo

Using Paint Shop Pro and any clipart available, create a logo representative of your business. Remember that the logo is often used as a trademark for a business. You may not use any registered trademark or copyrighted characters within your logo. You will need to create several sizes of this file for use in other documents within this project.

 

Organizational Chart

Using Microsoft Word and MS Organization Chart, create an organizational chart showing all positions and departments in your business. You will only use titles of the positions in this chart.

 

Business Documents

Using your business logo, create the following business documents to be used in the operation of your company:

  • Letterhead
  • Envelope
  • Memo
  • Fax Cover Sheet
  • Business cards for you as the owner/operator

 

Newspaper Want Ad

Your company needs to hire some new employees. Using a textbox with shadows, create a help wanted ad to advertise in the local newspaper. Research actual ads to determine the appropriate wording for your type of business/position. Remember that want ads are never in color in the newspaper.

 

Job Application

When those people start showing up to apply for the jobs that you advertised, you will need to have a job application. Create an appropriate job application for your particular business.

 

Yellow Page Ad

Check out the Yellow Pages in the local telephone book. After reviewing advertisements for businesses similar to yours, create an ad for your company.

 

Newspaper Sale Ad

Your company is planning a sale. Create a newspaper advertisement that includes at least one coupon for customers to use for a discount at your store. Don't forget the expiration date.

 

PostCard

Create an 8 1/2 X 5-inch postcard to announce a special sale, thank special customers for their loyalty, or introduce anew product or service to your company.

 

Form Letter

Using Microsoft Word, create a form letter to be sent to at least 5 customers. The letter must contain a minimum of 3 variable fields other than the name and address. The letter may be announcing a special event; introducing a new product or thanking them for being a loyal customer.

 

Order/Sales Invoice

Create a form to be used for customers to purchase/order your goods or services or as a sales receipt.

 

Purchase Invoice

Create a form to be used by you and your employees to buy goods and services from suppliers in order to operate your business.

 

Company Newsletter

Each quarter, your company produces a company newsletter to make announcements of new products, recognize outstanding accomplishments, update company policies and/or procedures, etc. Create a 1-page, 2-column company newsletter for you employees. This newsletter should have at least 4 news articles or sections as well as graphics and photographs.

 

Invitation

Your company is sponsoring the annual family picnic for all employees at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. Create a formal invitation to be mailed to each employee's home.

 

Employee of the Month Certificate

Each month a deserving employee is honored for their contributions to the company. Create a certificate to be used for this honor.

 

Company Web Page

Create a home page to be published on the internet for your company. Make links for later use for "Who We Are!", "How To Reach US!"; and "Send us E-mail!".
