Desktop Publishing Project

Activities:

1. Desktop Publishing

Create a Brochure

Using good layout and design techniques, create a three-fold brochure about the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Games.
You may include such things as

  1. Historical facts about the Olympics,
  2. Other Olympic games held in the US,
  3. Olympic symbols and traditions,
  4. Mascots,
  5. Facts about Salt Lake City, Utah.

2. Desktop Publishing

Research and create a trip itinerary with a budget.

Using the Internet for research, you are to plan a 4-day and 5-night trip for two to the Olympics. (Hint:http://www.tickets.com/olympics/initial.html and http://www.expedia.com)

Using a table format, print a daily itinerary with a column showing estimated costs. Your trip should include transportation from Norfolk, VA, lodging, food, events, sightseeing, and souvenirs as well as transportation at the games.

3. Spreadsheet

Medal Count

Choose a country that is participating in the Olympic games (other than the US) to follow for the duration of the games. Create spreadsheet and record the following information daily:

  1. Date
  2. Name of Event
  3. Gold Medals won (if any)
  4. Silver Medals won (if any)
  5. Bronze Medals won (if any)
  6. Total Medals won (if any)

As an extra precaution, you may wish to print a hard copy after each update as well as making backups of the file.

4. Presentation

Create a PowerPoint Presentation.

Now, you should research the country that you have chosen. Include such things as a map of the country; explain its location in relationship to the USA, the language, economics, flag, national anthem and any prior Olympic history.

Use this research to create a PowerPoint presentation using transitions, animations and sound.  The presentation should be a minimum of 6 slides.

5. Spreadsheets/Graphs

After the February 24 closing of the Salt Lake Olympic Games, you are to modify your country spreadsheet by creating totals for each column for the medal count for your team country.

At this time, you will complete all special formatting to make the spreadsheet as attractive as possible. Using the spreadsheet, create a pie graph that shows the breakdown of your country's medals. Be sure to create headings and legends. Print the graph and the spreadsheet on separate pages.

6. Spreadsheets/Graphs

Using the official medal count from the newspaper or the Internet, create a spreadsheet that shows the medal count for the top ten countries. Use all of your formatting techniques to make the spreadsheet attractive as well as readable. Now create graphs for gold medals, silver medals, bronze medals and total medals. Print each graph on a separate piece of paper. Be sure to make the graphs as attractive and informative as possible.  Print one copy of your spreadsheet.

7. Web Page Design

Create a webpage which must include at least one photograph, other graphics, a heading as well as a body and address line.

The page should depict and explain what you saw as the most moving moment at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. These pages will be posted in the Student Work Folders. Print one copy of your webpage after it is posted to the Internet.

When you have completed all projects, organize your work into a project portfolio for final grading. Use card stock to create your cover. Bind your work with the binding machine.
