| Course Description | Bricklayers
build walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces and other structures with brick.
cinder or concrete block and other masonry materials. In putting
up a wall, bricklayers usually use plumb lines and a level o build straight
corners. Then they stretch a line from corner to corner to use as
a guide for each course or layer of bricks. They may have to cut
bricks to fit around windows, doors or other openings. They use a
jointer tool to assure the mortar joints are neat and uniform in appearance.
Bricklayers may learn their trade on the job by starting out as helpers or hod carriers, or they may get a head start by learning the skill of bricklaying in a vocational program such as the one offered at The Pruden Center for Industry and Technology. There are apprenticeships available for bricklayers as well, after graduation from high school. Masonry is a one-year
program which teaches fundamental masonry skills such as laying brick to
a line, building corners and walls and estimating materials. Some
blueprint reading is also included.
