Course Description More and more types of electronic equipment are being used in American homes and offices every day and there is a need for service technicians to repair them.  some repairers specialize in one type of equipment, while others repair many types.  Most repairers work in repair shops and service centers or in stores that sell electronic equipment.  Many are self employed.

Electronic Product Servicing is a one-year program which includes the basics of digital electronics as applied to the repair of various types of electronic equipment.  Students study repair of home entertainment equipment as well as computers and microprocessors.

 

 
 

Characteristics  Manual dexterity, general intelligence and mechanical aptitude are important characteristics for this type of work.  A good background in math and physics would be valuable.  Good eyesight is need for working on small, delicate parts.  Good hearing may also be helpful in detecting malfunctions that are revealed by sound.  A pleasant personality, neat appearance and good communication skills are important when dealing with customers.  Since electronic product repairers often handle jobs alone, the ability to work well without close supervision is a must.

Opportunities
As the population grows, personal incomes rise and new products are developed, there will be more kinds of electronic equipment needing repair.  Opportunities for electronic equipment repairers should be good, especially for those who are willing to continue their education and specialize in the higher paying jobs in this field, such as computer and office machine repair.
