COSMETOLOGY

Course Description Throughout history, a great deal of time and effort has been devoted to fashionable hairstyling.  As long as people continue to care about the way they look, Cosmetologists will be important in our society.  Cosmetologists cut and style hair and explain to customers how to care for their hair.  Cosmetologists may straighten or permanent wave a patron's hair or change the color.  Some Cosmetologists also give manicures, facial treatments and make-up analysis.

All states require that Cosmetologists be licensed.  In Virginia, as in most states, the licensing qualifications require that the applicant be a graduate of a state approved Cosmetology school or program.  A State Board licensing examiniation is also required.

Cosmetology is a two-year course which includes both theory and practical instruction.  Students learn to style and care for hair, do manicures and pedicures and to perform facial, neckline and should massages.  After successfully completing the course requirements, the student is eligible to take the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology examination for the licensing of professional cosmetologists.

Characteristics Students interested in Cosmetology should enjoy working with people and should like to work with their hands.  They should have at least normal physical strength and an interest in good grooming.  A good math and science background is helpful and an artistic flair would be an asset.
