| Course Description | Carpenters
make up the largest group of building trade workers and are required for
nearly all construction projects. Working from blueprints or instructions
from supervisors, carpenters cut, shape and join materials, such as wood,
plastic, ceiling tile, fiberglass and drywall. They use a variety
of hand and power tools. Carpentry work is very active and may be
strenuous, requiring prolonged standing, climbing, bending and kneeling.
This two-year program teaches students to calculate dimensions, measure, lay-out and assemble wall sections and other parts of a house or shed. Students learn to install roofing materials, siding, interior/exterior trim and cabinets. The first year is an introductory course which exposes students to basic carpentry concepts and techniques. The second year consists of predominantly practical work as students complete a two- or three-bedroom house from start to finish. |
