Painting On Mason Jars

Painting Mason Jars
Dont have to use mason jars, use any type of jar in any shape, just choose type, size & shape which best fit project. Dont rule out plastic jars, work as well as glass. Clean jar thorough in warm sudsy water & make sure it's dry before beginning.

Getting Started -- BASE COATING

Takes couple days to give jars enough layers of base coat paint, so best to work with more than one jar at once... spray paint 1st layer in white or cream color, this saves time cuz you dont need to base coat as many layers. make sure you spray bottom & outside leaving last bit of rim clear. Set jar upside down to dry, when paint is complete dry, paint outside & inside of rim, now ready to give jars several coats of latex paint, if you choose not to spray jars, this'll be first step. Hold jar upside down with hand inside & thumb grasping onto rim, with 1" wide soft paint brush, apply even coat on bottom & sides, leave rim clear. Brush even, let paint dry complete, repeat 2-3 more times, take time & make sure jars are base coated even.
SPONGING

In order to get textured effect, use sponge, any kitchen sponge will do as long as it's clean, immediately after brushing on last coat, start dabbing jar all way around including bottom, making sure get an even look, set jar down carefully to dry, may want to repeat this step once more depending on how much or how little paint used in previous steps. Sounds complicated but really isnt, get feel for it after doing few jars, with technique turn any flat shiney surface, metal or plastic, in great painting surface. Can paint old trays, cookie sheets & old pie plates.
PAINTING THE RIM

When jars are completely dry, paint rim on outside & inside, repeat this step once more, after painting on 3rd layer, tap brush against inside of rim to give textured effect as well.
SHADING
To give jars that antique feel, shade bottom & outside rim in antique brown, this makes jars look worn & old.
KINDS OF PAINTS TO USE

For base coating, use flat wall paint, (latex) find this at local walmart or hardware store. Type of pattern wished to paint on jar, used here - americana decoart paints, but can use any type of acrylic paints you happen to have.
FINISHING

When finished painting desired pattern, make sure you spray or paint on closs varnish or acrylic sealer. Protects jars from nicks/scrapes.
