Berdan's Sharpshooters

My favorite unit Hiram Berdan's Sharpshooters. These is the monument for the Vermont companies of the Second regiment (top) and the First Regiment (bottom). It is located at the southern end of the cornfield on the Antietam National Battlefield Sharpsburg, Maryland.

All Captions after this point were written by fellow Park Ranger Chris Kolakowski

This upended cannon marks the spot where Major General Israel Richardson fell mortally wounded at the Bloody Lane.

The Irish Brigade monument at the Bloody Lane.

The Soldier's Monument in the National Cemetery.

Burnside's Bridge from the Federal perspective. From here the 48th Pa and 2nd Md poured in supporting fire as the 51st NY and 51st Pa charged over the bridge.

Burnside's Bridge as seen from the Confederate position on the heights above.

Antietam Creek from the bridge.

14th Brooklyn NYSM monument in the Cornfield. In the Maryland Campaign they went in with barely 100 men and suffered 54 casualties.

The Cornfield, looking north. The Federals formed in the North Woods, which stood on the far rise.
