ETA TAU HISTORY

The Eta Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University on May 14, 1970 by 8 strong, intelligent, beautiful black women. We have the honor of being not only the first Historically Black Sorority on the campus, but the FIRST GREEK LETTER ORGANIZATION of any kind.

For 30 years the Eta Tau Chapter has worked diligently within the VCU Community, as well as the City of Richmond surrounding areas. The chapter’s goals for working in the community have been, and still are centered around the sorority’s Public Service Initiatives of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Some of the activities and programs that the Eta Tau Chapter has implemented consisted of going to the OakRidge Learning Center, a juvenile home for young males, and the surrounding areas’ Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs to volunteer. The Eta Tau chapter has also done Adopt-a-Street cleanup on Main Street from the blocks of Belvidere and Harrison, which is located near the campus. The chapter has also done programs such as Domestic Violence and Health Week activities, Fashion and Hair shows that promoted African American businesses, and the Mr. Delta Pageant where proceeds have gone to Habitat for Humanity and D.R.E.F. (Delta Research and Educational Foundation). There have also been several programs such as Survival Skills Forums, Get Out of Debt Forums, and Exam Study Breaks that cater to the incoming freshmen of Virginia Commonwealth University.
