The Reunion
Travis led Danesha to the couch and they sat down. He offered Sheila a seat on the love seat a few feet away. The church ladies stared at the Reverend and the strippers.
"Oh, I'm sorry ladies. This is my sister Danesha, and her lov…her friend Sheila." He said. Most of the ladies just stared, and mumbled hello. One stepped from the crowd and extended her hand to both of them.
"Hi, I'm Sister Rogers. My granddaughter talks about you two all the time. She says you are excellent dancers and great friends." she said
Sheila and Danesha looked at her confused.
"This is Marissa's Granny." Travis said. Then suddenly he realized Marissa was gone.
"Where is Sister Marissa?" he asked.
"She went home Pastor, and now so are we, so we can let you visit with your company."
Granny quickly ushered the other ladies out.
"Thank you for coming, both of you" Travis said. "I don't think I could have gotten through all of this alone."
"We didn't know Lisa very well Travis, but we felt that...we should be here for you." Sheila said.
"That's what family is for." Danesha said quietly.
Travis took Danesha's hands into his.
"Baby D, I owe you an apology. I should never have turned my back on you. Even if Momma and Daddy didn't understand I should have stuck by you. They both loved you D, they just came from a different time. I was so desperate for Daddy's approval that I went along with them, even thought I knew they were wrong."
Travis paused to wipe a tear from Danesha's face.
" I have always regretted the way I treated you that day you came to hear me preach. I was wrong D. Please forgive me." He said.
"You looked just like Daddy, standing up there preaching Trap. I was so proud of you." She said through tears. "I still am." They hugged again.
After several minutes Sheila spoke.
"Okay enough of the family love. Trap how did you end up married to Lisa?" she asked. "I don't mean to sound hypocritical but she's a stripper and you're a minister? How does a man of God fall in love with a stripper?"
Travis's mind drifted to Marissa.
"It's easy to love a beautiful woman, no matter what she does for a living," he said. "But I was never in love with Lisa."
Travis told them the truth. How he'd met Lisa on the internet and they were not really married. One of his parishioners was the first cop on the scene of her murder. He'd recognized her from church. He told them that when he'd gotten the call from the police about her death and they were identifying her as his wife he decided to go along with it, and give her a proper burial. He knew that she had no family and few friends.
He'd wanted to tell them about Marissa, and how much he loved her but decided to wait. He also left out how the same cop had let him go without booking him at the police station earlier that evening after recognizing him. He had wanted to get Marissa out as well but could not explain their relationship to the parishioner so he had left.
He didn't tell them that he took a cab straight to Lisa's apartment to confront her about her job. How could she forget such an important detail? He had explained to her at length how important his ministry was, and how vital her role as his wife was to that ministry. He was livid that she had listened to all of that without once mentioning that she worked at the very club he was hoping to shut down.
He knew his sister and Sheila worked there, and even though he could deal with their relationship it sickened him to think of his sister up there dancing night after night. He had promised his father on his deathbed that he would make sure she stopped, even if it meant closing the doors of Chocolate City. He had promised.
As he urged the cab driver to go faster he realized that Lisa's prescence in his life was big mistake. He was in love for the first time in his life and could not be with her because everyone believe he was married. He thought that even if he convince Lisa to pretend to divorce him her job could ruin everything for him.
He would not only lose his appointment as minister at Greater St. Giles but probably his license to preach. He had never been so angry in his life, as he beat on Lisa's door.
Danesha brought him back to the present.
"Do you need any help with the arrangements Trap?" she said.
"Uhm No. Thank you for offering. Everything has been taken care of. The services are day after tomorrow at 4pm. My associate pastor will be presiding. You both will be there won't you?" he asked.
"Of course we will" they both said.
Travis decided to offer them some of the food his church members had been dropping off all day. The 3 of them went into the kitchen. As he sliced the ham Travis thought to himself.
His sister was back in his life now and soon he would convince her to quit the club along with Marissa. Lisa's was no longer a threat since he had told his parishioners how she lied to him and now she was dead. He would give her a proper funeral and move on with his life.
