Seeing Through the Eyes of the Heart
Words can never adequately express what it is like to love Shannon... or to have shared 23 years with her. She looked at life with an amazing clarity and honesty...and deep appreciation. Her art reflects the beauty she saw and the incredible patience she had in expressing that beauty with endless hours of colored pencil work.

Shannon's Art
Shannon was always reserved. Quiet and shy, except with her family and closest friends. Her art was a way to express herself creatively. She loved working with colored pencil. The pieces on the following pages are some of my favorites, and the pieces that are a part of her bookmarks.

Lingering Light
In August, following Shannon's accident, I returned to college. I knew that I would never be able to concentrate well enough to attempt math or science, but art felt comfortable and safe, and a way for me to share what Shannon had experienced as a Studio Art Major at Mary Washington. I found that as I started to look at life moment by moment, to try to capture and preserve what instilled hope and promise, I found a sort of calm in the storm. The light that lingered just before sunset, the light that seemed to linger on fingers touching, or Jilli's toes reminded me of the tenderness in life. I hope you enoy the simplicity of these moments.

Through Shannon's Eyes - Shannon's Camera
For Shannon's last Christmas with us, she received a camera. She had studied and compared and was very specific in what she wanted. She was so excited to see what was possible, using light as the medium. After she "left", I found the same comfort in spending time in nature, with her camera as I had found in the art classes. Time has been a valued teacher and although I still have much to learn, I have been blessed with some incredible moments, captured and now shared.

We would love to hear from you
