From Ok. St. website :
Oklahoma State, behind coach John Smith, is riding a 31-dual winning streak and returns
eight starters from last season's national runner-up team.
The Cowboys return five All-Americans, including junior Eric Guerrero, the reigning nat. champion at 126, and Sr. Steven Schmidt, the runner-up at 134. Schmidt will make the move to 142 pounds this season but should still be in the running for a national title.
Junior Teague Moore, the Cowboys' fireball 118-pounder, returns for his third season with the Cowboys. He finished fourth at the NCAA's a year ago. However, he should go into the season ranked number one as the three wrestlers ahead of him are gone due to graduation.
Mark Smith, the brother of head coach John and assistant coach Pat, will move down to his natural weight of 167. He wrestled up a class last season at 177 as nat. champion Cowboy Mark Branch was rolling to a second title at 167. Smith should be a leading contender for the 167-pound title.
Oklahoma State is in its 78th season of collegiate wrestling. The Cowboys have posted a 776-81-19 record for an .897 winning percentage. That is the best mark by any team sport in NCAA history. The Cowboys are also ranked No. 1 in the country. The Cowboys have won 30 national team titles and finished as the runner-up 11 times.
Won Reno Duels this weekend
beat #20 Rider 37-3, #13 Penn 35-3 & #5 Mich. 30-3. 6-0 in duels.
1/6 North Carolina State 7:30
1/9-10 Virginia Duals All Day
The win was the Cowboys' third straight tile. The past two have been won outright and they tied Nebraska in 1996. In the last two years at the duals, the Cowboys' have won 56 out of 60 matches in the duals. They have outscored their opponents 221-12.
Junior 167-pounder Mark Smith defeated second-ranked Brandon Slay 3-1 in OT. He also defeated third-ranked Jeff Catrabone in sudden death OT with a reverse with 19 seconds remaining earlier in the tournament. Smith, who has battled academic and injury problems this season, is 5-0 on the season and has defeated three of the top wrestlers in his weight class. Smith is ranked fourth nationally. Slay is the wrestler
that Cowboy great Mark Branch defeated in last years national final.
(Reno duels continued)
Senior Hardell Moore, ranked second at 158 pounds, defeated the Wolverines third-ranked Bill Lacure the exact same way Smith won, as he reversed Lacure in sudden death to win the match 5-3.
Third-ranked 118-poounder Teague Moore won his match over Chris Viola, 13-1. The two had wrestled an overtime match last year in the NCAA tournament with the Cowboys junior winning an OT decision.
Senior Steven Schmidt, a Tuttle product, may have been the Cowboys most dominant wrestler of the day as he picked up a pair of falls and a major decision including a 14-4 win over the Wolverines' Cory Grant.
old release from Edinboro website :
Edinboro University Head Wrestling Coach Bruce Baumgartner, the defending Olympic
superheavyweight free-style wrestling champion, has been selected by the U. S. Olympic
team to carry the American flag in Friday's opening ceremonies in Atlanta.
Baumgartner, who has been the head coach at Edinboro since 1990, was the 1995 Sullivan Award winner as the top amateur athlete in the United States. He captured Olympic gold at the 1984 and 1992 games and won a silver medal in 1988.
Should he win a gold medal at the Atlanta games, he will tie former Soviet Union great Alexander Medved as the only wrestlers ever to win three gold medals. Baumgartner is the three-time defending World Champion at 286 pounds.
Besides leading the U. S. team into the Centennial Olympic Stadium Friday night, July 19 (NBC, 8 p.m.), Baumgartner leads a four-man contingent of free-style wrestlers with strong ties to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Joining Baumgartner on the U. S. free-style team is Clarion University assistant coach
Rob Eiter, former Edinboro wrestler Lou Rosselli and former Clarion wrestler Kurt Angle.
Rosselli, who was a two-time All-American as a collegiate wrestler at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and now serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Fighting Scots, will be making his first Olympic appearance. He was an alternate for in 1992
