unofficial 1999 VHSL Ratings for Regions IV, III, D & C

With all the info I received this week about the enrollment numbers
and Ervinton's situation, a number of teams have had their power points
changed since Monday. Here are the up-to-date numbers, which are the
same as the official VHSL numbers (except for Ervinton - see below).

* Power points for a number of teams have been altered this week.
  A 'brief' explanation follows :
The VHSL has an 'early' deadline of May 15 for schools to submit their
fall football schedules. Then they request schedules and enrollment numbers
from neighboring states, and put together the master schedule.
The enrollment numbers they receive, which are, of course, estimates,
become official for the purpose of power points. Therefore, even though
the KSSAA website says Besty Lane has 630 students (which is for grades 9-12),
the VHSL uses the number sent to them over the summer (500 in grades 9-11).
So, Grundy does not receive a bonus point for Prestonsburg's victory over Betsy Lane.

+ Now, the Ervinton situation.

Teams have until Sept. 15 to let the VHSL know of any changes to the
schedule they submitted in May. Giles & William Fleming did this, so
their game on Oct. 23rd counts. However, the VHSL says that Ervinton
did not submit the Sept. 24th game they scheduled against Phelps by
Sept. 15th, so the Rebels don't 'officially' get the win. HOWEVER,
for some strange reason, it DOES count as being worth 1 power point
to the teams that beat Ervinton. Unfortunately, this situation was
not programmed into the VHSL's ratings program, so the only way the
computer can award the power points is to credit Ervinton with a win.
Therefore, all teams have the correct number of points EXCEPT for
  Ervinton.

cc - District co-champs (tiebreaker will determine who is named DC for seeding purposes)
DC = qualified as District Champion
Q = Qualified for playoffs based on points, but may be district champion
W = Wildcard qualifier
H = Host 1st round game
x = eliminated from playoff consideration
# - a number shows what seed has been determined
(these notations are NOT from the VHSL, but based on my personal computations)

* Altavista played 1 non-public school this season (Hargrave Military).
Games against non-public schools DO NOT COUNT in the power ratings,
which is actually the ratings points earned divided by
the number of games played against public schools.
Therefore, Altavista's 'total' is being multiplied by 1.111
to put them on an 'even keel' with the others.

Here's the out-of-state teams which will/may provide bonus points :

State School record points loses vs. above teams
W. Va. Bluefield 7-1 9 + 7 (10/29 vs. Richlands)
Montcalm 0-8 6 + 0 Craig, Pocy, Bland

Ky. Cumberland 0-9 6 + 0 Thomas Walker

Prestonsburg 3-6 9 + 3 Grundy
Tenn. Sullivan Central 5-4 9 + 4 Gate City

Or, better yet, without even PLAYING a district game at home? In a major scheduling quirk, that was accomplished last night by the Graham G-Men, who who all (four) of their district games on the enemy's turf. Next season, all three of the G-Men's out-of-town trips will be at least an hour each way.

Graham was only one of four SW Va. teams who claimed a crown last night... Congrats also go out to Gate City, George Wythe & Honaker.

The only title left up for grabs this side of Roanoke is in the LPD, where 3 teams will take 4-1 records into their district finales.

A number of teams can still make the playoffs in various ways, and a few seeds are still undecided. Since their's a game today, and Tech is on TV tonight, the earliest I'll post everything will be Sunday afternoon.

only play three games on the road, but ----------------------
arroll County is the #3 seed and will travel to the
loser of Friday night's Piedmont District title game
between Martinsville & Tunstall. The winner will be
the #1 seed and will host either Marion or Magna Vista.

Only a Vista win and Hurricane loss would knock Marion
out.

Graham will host Tazewell and #1 seed Gate City
will host either Lebanon, Va. High or Grundy.
This is gonna be fun :

If Va. High beats Tazewell and Grundy beats Lebanon,
the Bearcts are in.

If Va. High beats Tazewell and Lebanon beats Grundy,
the Bearcats can edge out Lebanon only if :
Richlands beats Carroll County, Abingdon beats Marion,
and John Battle beats Rural Retreat.

If Va. High loses, Lebanon is in with a win over Grundy.

But if Grundy wins, they can still sneak in.
If Gate City beats Lee, either a Coeburn win over George Wythe
or a Garden win over Honaker would put the Wave in.
If Gate City loses to Lee, Grundy would need both Coeburn &
Garden to win to knock out Lebanon.

This one is tough because both the Lonesome Pine and
Cumberland District titles are up for grabs.

Both Powell Valley and Clintwood are in, although
either team could end up seeded anywhere from 1-4.

Honaker will host a first round game, and the
opponent will NOT be the LPD champ.

Haysi will make it on points unless Castlewood
backs into the Cumberland title.

For more info on the district races, see D-1

This one is tough because both the Lonesome Pine and
Cumberland District titles are up for grabs.

Pound and Rye Cove will have home games, while the
other two spots are being fought over by St. Paul,
Garden, JI Burton & Whitewood (if they beat Pound
Saturday).

The Lonesome Pine race :
Powell Valley wins the title with a win.
If the Vikings lose to Appy (hey, it's possible),
the Clintwood - Pound winner will be district champ.

The Cumberland race is just as easy to follow.
Rye Cove claims it with a win. If they lose,
St. Paul claims it with a win. If THEY lose,
Castlewood is the champ.

St. Paul is in the unique position of possibly
being a #1 seed or maybe missing the playoffs
completely.

William Byrd will open at Amherst Co. Salem
has the #1 seed wraped up.

Lord Botetourt could take the fourth seed away
from Jefferson Forest depending on the outcome
of 6 other games.

The Gretna-Appomattox loser plays Brookville, while
the winner gets the top seed and will host either
Rustburg or Alleghany.

Floyd Co. will open at home, while George Wythe could
end up seeded anywhere in the top 3.
Chilhowie, Giles, Radford & Patrick Henry will duke
it out for the last spot.

Covington is the top seed. Northwood opens at home
against either Narrows or Rural Retreat.

If Lebanon beats Grundy :
the Pioneers are in UNLESS

is in with a win over
Grundy.

Grundy is the long shot,
needing these things to happen to get in :
a win (at home) over Lebanon, a Va. High loss (at home)
to Tazewell, a Garden win over Honker, a Coeburn win over
George Wythe, and a
