VHSL & site news

This is the hot spot. Here you'll find my little comments about the state of the game and other football goings-on.

Thur. Oct.11 :

My computer is still down, but I've posted the current power ratings and standings . If all goes well, I'll have them updated by 6 p.m. Sat., and I'll have a ton of news posted by Fri. morn.

Just a quickie here. . . can you believe that there's a district that STILL has 4 undefeated teams half-way through the season? And the other teams have winning records? Incredible!!!

Sun. Sept.16 :

Because of the terrorist attacks on Tuesday, a lot of NoVa & Richmond area school systems called off all of their sports events for the rest of the week, causing quite a mess. Some games were cancelled, some are postponed TFN, and some were moved to either Monday or Tuesday. Look for many of those teams to move their Friday night game to Saturday. The VHSL Executive Committee will meet on Wed. & Thurs. in C'ville. One of the items that may be discussed will be the possibility of pushing the playoffs back a week to make room for make-up games.

According to a story in Monday's Washington Post, if an extra week can't be added, the teams that don't make the playoffs would like to play their 10th game that weekend anyway, and donate some of the proceeds to charity. Of course, those games wouldn't count officially.

Having lived in Arlington for a while, just a few miles up Washington Blvd., from the Pentagon, I understand that this is a very traumatic event, even worse for those who knew or are related to someone in the Pentagon. I don't know if I would want to try and play Monday or Tuesday, but you have to get back to 'normalacy' sometime. I know they'll have a tough go on this decision. I haven't had time to check out how many Tidewater-area games were played. But IMHO, I think they could give Group AAA a make-up week, and allow those who did play this week the option of changing the date of one of their October games to that weekend, so those who don't want a week lay-off between the end of the season and the start of the playoffs won't have one. Since so few of the Group AA & A teams didn't play, their dates shouldn't change.

Some of the colleges are adjusting their schedules to make-up games from this weekend.
South Carolina is looking for a new team to play with an open date of Nov. 3 or Nov. 24.
Oregon State canceled their game against I-AA Montana State and added I-AA Northern Arizona on Nov. 17.
Michigan rescheduled their game with Western Michigan for Saturday, and moved the Illinois game scheduled that day to Sept. 29, which had been an open week for both teams. Western Michigan moved its original home game on Saturday against Ball State to Nov. 24.
A lot of other changes are expected. Sportsline.com should be your best source.

See ya soon.

Fri. Sept.14 :

From what I can find out, all games in and around SW VA will be played tonight. The only modifications I'm currently aware of is that Group AAA's Northern Region council has cancelled all athletic contests through Monday. It is unknown if the VHSL will allow them the opportunity to play the football games at a later date.

Sat. Sept. 8 :

Since I had such a problem finding all the scores from last night, I decided to post what I did find. I've confirmed most of the SWVA scores from newspaper stories, but not the other parts of the state.

Thur. Aug. 29 :

Is it that time, already? WOW!?!? IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN THE BILLION DOLLAR COALFIELDS (maybe we should look into changing that to "million" here soon). The ol' pigskin gets off the ground down here this weekend (FYI, Graham's game was in WEST Va. last week) and the first game will be played at Grundy. Following in step with what Kentucky has been doing, we open the season with a "bowl" game. The Food City Bowl is something new to Va. this year, and it will have a strange twist. The first game kicks off at 5:30 with the brand-new Twin Valley Panthers playing the soon-to-be-defunct Elkhorn City Cougars. Twin Valley was 'created' a few months back with the merger of Whitewood and Garden High Schools. The old Garden High is now the new TVM/ES, while the Whitewood building got the new TVHS name. The Panthers will play their home games on the Garden field. Meanwhile, ECHS is going to merge NEXT Summer with a couple of other Pike Co. highs to form East Ridge H.S. The nightcap will have Grundy playing Shelby Valley, Ky.

The colleges also open this weekend, with UVA-Wise and Tech at home while Emory's on the road. (BTW, does anyone have an extra ticket to the Dec. 1 Miami game? If so, let me know.)

I have a TON of stuff to post, but I haven't been able to get to it. By computer went in for an upgrade in July, and I STILL haven't got it back yet. As soon as I do, I'll move all the 2000 stuff and give ya enough 'news' to keep ya busy a while.

Also, if anyone hears of any forfeits, let me know. Those things are next to impossible to track down. I was lucky enough to be visiting Tech a while back when those VERY late 2000 forfeits were in the paper (more about that next time).

One more thing, will NCAA Division 1 football (1-AA, actually) REALLY see it's first female tonight?

See ya at the 'bowl'.
