Names in the News
Congrats to some of the states top players from last year :
Brooke Point running back Daniel Davis (the AAA Player of the Year) broke a couple of
AAA scoring records that Ronald Curry set in '97 : 612 career points (4th overall) and
103 TD's (2nd overall, 1 behind Powell Valley's Thomas Jones).
Thomas' younger brother Julius finished 7th overall in points with 572 and 6th in TD's
with 95.
Two young ladies from the area were among nine student-athletes to receive
the VHSL Achievement Award in May, given to students who have excelled
in the classroom and in athletic and academic activities.
Graham's Lauren Williams was named the Group AA Female Athlete of the Year.
Lauren earned nine letters in Tennis, Volleyball and Cheerleading. The class
president plans to attend Radford U. in the fall.
Powell Valley's Brooke Zirkle was named the Group A Female Athlete of the Year.
Brooke earned ten letters in Basketball, Volleyball and Track, along with
numerous all-district and all-region honors. Brooke plans to take her 4.08 GPA
to Emory in the fall.
Congratulations to the 6 new members of the VHSCA & VHSL Hall of Fame.
Roanoke sportscaster James Carroll will be among those inducted this fall.
Jim's air-time would make even Michael Jordan jealous, as he has broadcast
over 1,100 games in 35 years.
Also being honored is Abingdon's Jennifer Jerrue Bradley, whose work with
Forensic participants in Debate, Speech and Theater helped the Falcons win
the Central Fidelity/Wachovia cup for excellence in academic activities
9 consecutive years.
Their induction will take place at Charlottesville's Omni Hotel in mid-October.
