Salem / Stagg Bowl
Come down I-77 about 2 hours past Charleston WV to Wytheville VA.
I-77 is also the "WV Turnpike" and has 3 toll plazas of $1.25 each
(near mileposts 81, 57 and 30).
I-77 South will run into I-81 North (yeah, you read that right).
Both lanes of 77 will go over 81 and become a downhill ramp to the left
- the left lane continues after the "ramp" ends and the right lane must
merge over into it before the upcoming exit (which has a Cracker Barrel).
81/77 stays 6 lanes for about 5 miles, when the right lane becomes an
exit for I-77 South to Charlotte. Stay on 81 North for about an hour.
When you get to Salem, take Exit 141 (Rt. 419).
At the bottom of the ramp, turn RIGHT onto the 4-lane. Go about
2 miles and continue straight at the BUS 460 (Main Street) light.
Go about half a mile (just past Fudruckers) and you'll BEAR RIGHT
just after crossing a little bridge onto "460 Bypass / Truck Route".
Expect traffic to be backed up as Salem Stadium is just over the
knoll on the left (right behind the Salem Civic Center).
Salem Stadium opened just over 20 years ago and officially seats
7,157 fannies, but has held about 10,000 for a high school game.
2005 will be the stadium's 13th Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (out of 33).
Traffic info is available by calling 5-1-1 on your cell phone.
State road maps are available at the VA welcome center, about 5
miles south of the state line / East River Mtn. Tunnel.
--- Alternate route ---
Just before Bluefield VA, you can take US 460 East from Princeton
through Blacksburg (home of Va. Tech) to Christiansburg, where
you can 1.) continue on 460 (an old road across a mountain) or
2.) hit I-81 North (which is a lot better and faster).
--- backup route ---
US 11 runs parallel to I-81 from Wytheville into Salem (usually less
than a mile from the Interstate) and can be easily accessed from just
about every exit if 81 is blocked due to an accident.
