VHSL-helper's 2011 Spring Jubilee info page

Having went to RU "back in the day", I thought having the word of a "local" on directions, locations and grub might be of some help.

Don't forget... Group A is beginning the use of Divisions this year in many Spring sports.

Scores and notes are below. Here's some more links to follow the action ... Bristol Herald-Courier , WHSV, Harrisonburg , James River softball (RTWN), Holston softball , everything Loudoun , all scores - NN Daily Press Thur. aft. update VDOT has decided when they'll bring down the old bridge out on 114. Guess what??? It'll be Friday at 10 am, so expect delays if you're going to Tech or the mall. Updated the map with some new eats and cleaned up some of the directions. Added movie info, in case of rain-outs, an audio link, and blog links. Be aware that some of te Sat. times might get changed Fri. evening/night if a semis winner has graduation scheduled for Sat. If you want live updates, check the Roanoke Times & NN Daily Press. Only 1 school will be trying for the baseball/softball sweep this year - Northside. (I expected more since Group A has started using Divisons). George Mason, Radford, Blacksburg & Jefferson Forest can pull off a soccer sweep. Wed. evening update NORTHSIDE'S graduation is Friday morning, so their game times have been changed. Added more info on the remaining teams. Will work on updating the map tomorrow... kinda busy with something else tonight... I know you've heard of Snakes on a Plane.. what about a plane on the interstate? Wed. morning update Added scores from last night & the matchups in the semis. Picked up lots of good info from newspaper stories, mainly from Bristol & Roanoke Monday updates Added some records I found at the Roanoke Times and posted on VaPreps by NNDman, added some start times & locations, and noted the "lame-duck" schools. Added directions at the bottom to Bristol's Sugar Hollow & Belle Meadows. WDBJ is reporting a forest fire near Buena Vista - expect smoke near Parry McCluer HS. Weather.com currently calls for highs in the upper 80's w/a 50% chance of showers. IMPORTANT TRAFFIC INFO VDOT is blasting Christiansburg Mtn. to add truck-climbing lanes along 1-81. Delays are possible. A blast last week closed the Southbound lanes for a while - traffic was diverted onto US 460/11 between Exit 118 (C'burg/B'burg) & 132 (Shawsville). You can see a live shot of traffic at mile marker 124.9 here And VDOT is FINALLY removing the long-closed bridge over the New River on 114 between Radford & the burgs. Demolition/blasting is scheduled for today & Tuesday was PPD - TBA. A new bridge should be open to traffic by Thanksgiving, 2014.

Food

Fast food is not a nearby option for the Dedmon Center Complex, so come prepared for concession-stand cuisine. Here's the "big names" around town .... Macado's is located across the tracks from Dedmon, but there's no short-cut to it. It's across from Madison St. (not Adams, as the map shows); BT's is located across from campus at Tyler & Downey, beside the 7-11. Papa John's is about half a mile back up the hill towards I-81 on Tyler (177), Quiznos and Spinnakers (in the Best Western) are on up a piece. Subway & a yogurt place are on Main Street, but have limited parking. The others are on out Main a bit. Domino's is on top of the hill just past downtown along with Taco Inn and Little Ceasar's. Go about another mile and there's an Appleby's on the right (about 5 minutes). At the traffic light, you can go straight to Sonic, Arby's, or El Charro & Sal's Italian (about 8 minutes from Dedmon). Or turn right on 11 towards Pulaski to hit rest. row : McD's, Hank's Drive-In, Bojangles, etc. Go on up the hill and there's a Hardee's at the light. Turn right towards Tech for Taco Bell, which is a left at the light for Wal-Mart. There's also a ton of eats around the NRV Mall (about 25 minutes from Dedmon). In Blacksburg, I've gotta mention Log Cabin BBQ in the U. Mall. Five Guys, Macado's, Subway & Starbucks are right across the Blvd., and, of course, Greek's downtown. And if you're there early enough, Carol Lee's Doughnuts is out on Main Street, just past the light near the closed HS. Here's a list of places from WSLS.

Movies

If it's too hot for anything else and you want to take in a show, there's 2 options... Radford has a discount twin-cinema in the plaza behind McDonalds and there's a megaplex in the NEV Mall. Here's their links at the Roanoke Times... Radford and Regal NRV 14. And the Roanoke Times just posted some money-saving tips you might be interested in.
