VHSL-helper's 2010 Spring Jubilee info page

Having went to RU "back in the day", I thought having the word of a "local" on directions, locations and grub might be of some help.

Sat. eve. update

The Va. High baseball game was delayed by lightning around 12:05, then rain around 12:45, with the 'Cats down 4-3 in the 7th. All other 10 a.m. contests are final.
The rest of the action was postponed until Sunday. Va. High takes the field at 9 am, everyone else at 10 am. Temps will be in the mid-70's with a 30% chance of rain.

Friday evening updates

ALL of the semis are finished and ALL finals will be played at their originally scheduled times (Madison County & Jefferson Forest both lost).
SW VA did fairly well today, as Va. High (baseball), Abingdon & Holston (softball), Blacksburg & Hodden Valley (boys soccer), and Radford (boys & girls soccer) all made the finals.
      Holston's girls took a DH from Abingdon on March 18th, 3-2 & 4-3.
The only schools with more than 1 (non-tennis) team playing Sat. are George Mason & Radford, who'll play a b/g soccer DH for the 2nd stright year. Mason swept last year, as the boys won 1-0 and the girls won 3-2.
Traffic was a mess for late arrivers today due to a wreck on I-81. A pickup towing a camper overturned just before the southbound ramp at Exit 105, blocking both lanes, just before noon. All southbound traffic took Exit 109 and got back on 81 at Exit 105.

Friday morning updates

Just a remainder that girls softball rotates locations every year. This year, Veteran's Park will host SINGLE A and AA is at Dedmon.
The Roanoke Times will be posting updates on Twitter.
Latest weather forecast calls for highs in the mid 80's F/S.

Food

Fast food is not a nearby option for the Dedmon Center Complex, so come prepared for concession-stand cuisine. Here's the "big names" around town .... Macado's is located across the tracks from Dedmon, but there's no short-cut to it. It's across from Madison St. (not Adams, as the map shows); BT's is located across from campus at Tyler & Downey, beside the 7-11. Papa John's is about half a mile back up the hill towards I-81 on Tyler (177), Quiznos and Spinnakers (in the Best Western) are on up a piece. Subway is on Main Street and has limited parking. The others are on out Main a bit. Domino's is on top of the hill just past downtown along with Taco Inn and Little Ceasar's. Go about another mile and there's an Appleby's on the right (about 10 minutes from Dedmon). At the traffic light, you can go straight to Sonic, Arby's, or Sal's Italian Rest. Or turn right on 11 towards Pulaski to hit rest. row : McD's (which has re-opened), BK, Wendys, Long Johns, KFC, Golden Corral, Hank's Drive Inn & a new Bojangles. Go on up the hill and there's a Hardee's at the light. Turn right at that light (Pepper's Ferry Road towards C'burg/B'burg) and there's a Taco Bell up on the left, in front of Wal-Mart. There's also a Red Robin at the NRV Mall and a Fazoli's diagonal from there (about 30 minutes from Dedmon). In Blacksburg, I've gotta mention Log Cabin BBQ in the U. Mall, Five Guys & Macado's are right across the Blvd., and, of course, Greek's downtown. And if you're there early enough, Carol Lee's Doughnuts is out on Main Street near the HS (where the debris of their former gym has finally been hauled away). Here's a list of places from WSLS.

the games

State quarterfinals games are $8 and will be played "locally" Tuesday evening. State semis & finals are $10 (for an all-day pass) and will be played F/S. All times are subject to change due to graduations and bad weather. Who plays who and who's the home team In Group AA, the Region IV champ is bracketed with the Region II champ. In Group A, the Region D champ is bracketed with the Region B champ. The Region IV/D champ will always be the home team. Regional champs get to be "home" against a regional runner-up. I've listed the pecking order of who gets to be "home" with every event. Overall records are mainly from newspaper articles and may not be exact. * denotes defending state champions ** 2009 runner-up Official updates can be found on the VHSL website - links are at the bottom. Poquoson (AA) & Va. High (A) are trying for a baseball/softball sweep. Islander fans take note... the 1:00 game is 30 minutes away in Pulaski. Blacksburg, Broad Run, Hidden Valley (AA), Radford & George Mason (A) are trying for a soccer sweep; B'burg is the only one that plays back-to-back. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BASEBALL - AA quarterfinals, Tuesday 6 Powhatan Indians (22-3) 6:00 0 Brentsville District Tigers (21-5) 5:00 11 Potomac Falls Panthers (22-3) 16 *Poquoson Islanders (26-1) 7 Jefferson Forest Cavaliers (21-4) 6:00 4 Cave Spring Knights (15-11) 6:00 3 Tunstall Trojans (23-2) 10 Fort Defiance Indians (20-3) semis - Friday @ Pulaski's Calfee Park 3 Jefferson Forest Cavaliers (21-5) 10:00 10 *Poquoson Islanders (27-1) 1:00 10 Potomac Falls Panthers (23-3) 0 Fort Defiance Indians (20-4) 4th trip to semis this decade finals - Saturday @ RU 9 *Poquoson Islanders (28-1) 1:00 - ppd to 10 am Sun due to rain 1 Potomac Falls Panthers (23-4) Panthers 1st trip to finals - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BASEBALL - A quarterfinals, Tuesday 8 Northumberland Indians (12-13) 6:00 1 Altavista Colonels (16-10) 6:00 13 *Chatham Cavaliers (17-8-1) 8 Rappahannock Raiders (22-3) Cavs won 7-2 in '09 quarters 10 Fort Chiswell Pioneers (18-8) 7:00 7 **Gate City Blue Devils (21-6) 7:00 11 Virginia High Bearcats (19-8) 8 inn. 2 Glenvar Highlanders (19-6-1) @ Salem's Kiwanis Field, near SCC & ALMS Glenvar's 4th str. q/f loss to Region D semis - Friday @ RU 5 *Chatham Cavaliers (17-9-1) 10:00 8 **Gate City Blue Devils (21-7) 1:00 6 Virginia High Bearcats (20-8) 10 inn. 9 Rappahannock Raiders (23-3) 'Cats win on a close call at 1st w/ 2 outs (Chatham beat Gate City 10-4 in the '09 finals) finals - Saturday @ RU 7 Rappahannock Raiders (23-3) 10:00 - susp around noon due to lightning & rain 4 Virginia High Bearcats (20-8) with Rapp. ahead 4-3 in the 7th; resumed 8 am Sun.
