2013 weekly schedules

Pick a Friday :   scrims & Aug. 23 O-o-S       Aug. 30       Sept. 6       Sept. 13       Sept. 20       Sept. 27

                          Oct. 4         Oct. 11       Oct. 18       Oct. 25       Nov. 1       Nov. 8       Nov. 15 +

         - - - understanding my weekly schedule page lay-out - - -

With the demise of Regions, I've decided to change the look of the weekly
schedule pages. Games are now listed by START TIME - all of the 7:00 games
are together, as are the 7:30 games (this should be less confusing for you
and easier for me to work with on Friday nights). Geographically, I start
with Richlands (since that's where my paychecks come from), then move north
into Buchanan County, then down towards Bristol, then up 81 to Roanoke,
followed by any other Va. games I want to keep up with that week. This is
followed by games of out-of-state schools (in CAPS) that give bonus points
to 1A & 2A West teams, so some games have BOTH teams in CAPS (like PHELPS
@ JENKINS). Sometimes you'll see a game with no team in caps - these
are other teams from my neighboring counties of McDowell (WV) & Pike (KY)
that I keep up with for my game-night scoreboard (which can be heard at
10:30 & 11:05 at wgth.net), but I don't post the final scores here, since
I can't guarantee their accuracy on Friday nights.

+ means this is a district game.

    * means the team is a private school and doesn't count in the ratings.

   (1) means the game is "special" ... look for details down the page.

Regional college games, "important" college games & NFL games in which
former locals will be playing are listed at the bottom.

I also note homecoming games and schedule changes as I find out about them
(since VA has a history of Fall weather wackiness), so the "down-the-road"
pages are usually updated weekly, and the "current" week page is updated as
needed (sometimes nightly). I also add state rankings whenever possible.

ALWAYS check if you plan to attend a game. I do NOT check with the schools
for changes, but I do regularly check newspapers, msg. boards and a few school
web sites. (Ky. & Tenn. are notorious to move games to Thur. night when a
teachers' in-service day is scheduled for a Friday.)

Now, a note about the North Carolina teams : NC does 2 things that's a bit
"foreign" to us. First, when a large town / city has more than 1 school,
they'll add the city before the school name, like (Greensboro) Grimsley and
(Winston-Salem) Atkins. 2nd, when a school name is used more than once in
the state, they'll add the city before the school name. So A.C. Reynolds in
Asheville usually becomes Asheville Reynolds & R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem
usually becomes W.S. Reynolds. Also, for some reason, John Morehead in Eden
is commonly called (Eden) Morehead.

      - - - interesting 2013 schedule tidbits - - -

(With the new "combined" Districts and the placing of schools in their
'right' Class, this section has been greatly compacted.)

KY & TN begin their regular seasons a week before VA does.
The first games that count in the ratings will be played on Thursday 8/22 as
Tenn. High hosts Johnson Co. in Bristol and Sullivan North hosts Seymour in
Kingsport (yeah, it's race weekend).

NC also opens on the 23rd, but they have an 11-game schedule (they include
their Endowment Game), so the games on the 23rd don't count when it comes to
the VHSL ratings.

While VA technically begins on the 8/30, some eastern teams that were
unable to put together a 10 game schedule got permission to open a week early,
so we have two 'real' games on the 23rd... Huguenot at Norview and Menchville
at Maury; and Phoebus travels to DeMatha, MD on the 24th.

Three teams were still only able to find 9 games ... Booker T. Washington,
I.C. Norcum and George Wythe (Richmond).

A couple of 1A teams are playing "non-District" schedules again this year.
Rappahannock County plays just 7 games, with just 3 vs. VHSL teams.
Chincoteague plays just 8 games, with just 1 vs. a VHSL team (Rapp. Co.).

Speaking of 'District schedules', the VHSL's new rule which allows teams
to NOT play a District rival that has at least a 3 Class difference (a rule
that I call the "'new' Martinsville rule") shows up around Roanoke this year.
3A Cave Spring and 3A Blacksburg don't play 6A PH-Roanoke, and
3A Patrick Co., 3A Tunstall and 2A Martinsville don't play 6A Franklin Co.

There's a handful of District games on opening weekend, including a couple
of inter-county games in SW VA... Marion at Chilhowie (Hogoheegee) and Grundy
at Twin Valley (Black Diamond).

Marion is the first team in the state that will finish district play,
wrapping it up on Oct. 18th, followed by Va. High on the 25th.

Bethel, Denbigh, Hampton and Woodside all finish the regular season on
Halloween night.

Osbourn, Amherst County, Liberty (Bedford), Strasburg, Stonewall Jackson
(Quicksburg) and Radford alternate home and away games with an open date.

Albemarle & Dan River alternate home and away games without an open date.

First Colonial, James River (Chesterfield), Tabb, Lafayette, Tuscarora,
and Cave Spring alternate home and away game DATES (which means they open
and close the 11 week schedule with the same H/A 'location').

    6A Oscar Smith (2011 Div. 6 champ) plays @ 4A Lake Taylor (2012 Div. 5
champ) on 9/6 on ESPNU.

    5A L.C. Bird (Div. 6 champ) plays @ 4A Lake Taylor (Div. 5 champ) on 10/4.

In a rematch of the Div. 2 finals, 2A Goochland plays @ 1A Essex on 8/30.
Div. 2 runner-up Essex plays at Div. 3 runner-up James Monroe on 10/4.

other interesting tidbits from the VHSL master schedule

1A Rye Cove & Twin Springs only plays 1A schools.

Four 1A schools only play 1 school outside of 1A... Craig Co. (James River),
Haysi (Grundy), Thomas Walker (Lee) and Northwood (Marion)... all are in 2A.

1A Radford only plays FOUR 1A schools and SIX larger-Classed schools.

2A Grayson Co. & A Twin Valley open up by playing in THREE different states.

3A Abingdon only plays 1 school NOT in a smaller Class... 4A Volunteer (TN).

    3A Magna Vista plays at least one game against 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A & 6A schools.

4A Bassett plays at least one game against schools in ALL 6 Classes
(but they went O-o-S for the 1A game).

4A Sherando only plays ONE Va. team before October.

A bunch of schools don't play their first Home or Away game until 9/27 -
Home : Tazewell, Rye Cove, Patrick Henry (Roanoke), Charlottesville,
       Armstrong, Arcadia and Windsor
Away : Lee, Castlewood, Nandua & John Champe.

The first Away game for Wilson Memorial isn't until Oct. 4th

And a couple of schools only have THREE home games this year and won't have
a Home game until MID-OCTOBER... Cumberland on 10/11 and Auburn on 10/18.

Grundy goes SEVEN weeks between Away games (8/30 - 10/18).

Granby's last Away game is 10/11

    Grundy & Castlewood's last Home game is 10/4, Bethel's is 9/26

AND Richmond's George Wythe only has ONE home game this year (Again...
WHY did they even bother building a stadium???)

A review of the out-of-state games scheduled for this year show...

THREE schools play FOUR O-o-S games this year - Arcadia, Nandua and
Twin Valley (which travels up past Huntington/Charleston for one of their
three O-o-S trips).

Hurley is the only school with THREE O-o-S teams scheduled (all from KY).

Gotta send a big THANK YOU to the WV schools that help fill our schedules.
Of the 68 O-o-S games this year, 28 are against teams from the Mountain State.
Washington plays Sherando, Handley & Skyline.
Bluefield plays Graham, Richlands & Gate City.
And Montcalm not only plays FIVE Va. schools, but they do it in consecutive
weeks... the Generals host VA teams the entire month of Sept.

With the new system, this year we have 52 schools in 6A, 5A & 4A,
53 in 3A and 49 football-playing schools in 2A & 1A for a total of
307 teams.

There are 1,016 District games, 470 non-district games, 68 games
against O-o-S teams and 22 games against non-VHSL schools, for a
grand total of 1,576 games this season.

Finally, here's some stuff that the VHSL master schedule has wrong...

The 9/20 West Potomac at W.T. Woodson contest IS a Patriot District game.

The 10/11 George Marshall at JEB Stuart game is NOT a District game.

Middlesex is actually playing all Away games this year because they're
building new athletic facilities.
